Cleveland Draws Blanks Against Cole
Monday, May 28th , 2001
The Cleveland Spiders had no answer for Los Angeles Angels pitcher Gerrit Cole. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 7-0. Cleveland managed only 4 hits off Cole, who had 6 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Cole got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Angels fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
In 11 starts this season, Cole has recorded 2 wins and absorbed 5 losses. He has pitched 66.1 innings, allowed 60 hits, struck out 51 and has a 5.70 ERA.
