Houston Draws Blanks Against Whitney
Tuesday, June 19th , 2001
Jim Whitney of the Birmingham Black Barons was on top of his game.
The 24-year-old tantalized the Houston Colt 45s with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 1-0.
"He had the changeup working," Houston manager Daniel Makonnen said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Birmingham hurler had 8 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 4 hits in his complete-game effort.
Whitney told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
On the year, Whitney has worked 78.2 innings with 65 strikeouts en route to a 3-2 record and 3.55 ERA.
