Smashing Success: Berkman Wallops 3 HR Saturday, July 7th , 2001 His swing was a thing of beauty. Three times Lance Berkman swung the bat and three times he delivered a home run. It was an awesome sight to behold at League Park, but to no avail, for as good as he was, the Los Angeles Angels were better. The Cleveland Spiders couldn't capitalize on the big game from Berkman and dropped the contest, 8-7. The mood in the Spiders clubhouse afterward was subdued, with several players remarking that they had allowed the Angels to spoil the day for Berkman. "Some of the boys are beating themselves up about it," Cleveland manager Daniel Makonnen said. "They know we win as a team and lose as a team, but it's hard to really put that idea into practice on a day when one of you was playing on such an obviously higher level." In addition to the homers, Berkman collected 5 RBIs and scored 3 runs. "I got three pitches down the pipe and popped them," the Cleveland first baseman told reporters. "Today I was in a groove. Tomorrow I could just pop the same pitches up and go 0-for-3." Lance Berkman hit a solo-shot off Tom Seaver in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Tom Seaver in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Tom Seaver in the 5th and struck out in the 8th. In his season totals Berkman has 28 home runs and a .271 batting average. |
