Miami Sends Braun to Birmingham Tuesday, July 10th , 2001 In a move that has fans in both cities buzzing, the Miami Cuban Giants and the Birmingham Black Barons have agreed to a deal that will have 24-year old LF Ryan Braun, 23-year old minor league 1B Richie Sexson, and a 7th round draft pick heading to Birmingham in exchange for 24-year old RHP Jim Whitney, 29-year old LF Andy Pafko, 21-year old minor league RF José Cruz, and a 2nd round draft pick. Provided they pass a physical, the players should be with their respective teams in time for tomorrow's games. Braun has collected 82 hits for the Black Barons this year, 31 of them home runs. He has also netted 55 RBIs and scored 60 runs while batting .276. Thus far this season, Whitney has compiled a 5-2 record, made 14 relief appearances with 1 save, hurling 101.1 innings and striking out 87. He has held the opposition to a .197 batting average with a 3.11 ERA. |
