Cuban Giants Méndez Tames Chicago
Sunday, July 22nd , 2001
José Méndez of the Miami Cuban Giants was on top of his game.
The 23-year-old tantalized the Chicago American Giants with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 1-0.
"He had the changeup working," Chicago manager Daniel Makonnen said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Miami hurler had 6 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.
Méndez told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
This season, Méndez has gone 9-5 with an ERA of 4.12, posting 136 strikeouts in 150.2 innings.
