Gibson Goes Deep 3 Times
Monday, July 23rd , 2001
His swing was a thing of beauty. Three times Josh Gibson swung the bat and three times he delivered a home run. It was an awesome sight to behold at Hilltop Park, but to no avail, for as good as he was, the Ottawa Mounties were better.
The Homestead Grays couldn't capitalize on the big game from Gibson and dropped the contest, 9-8.
The mood in the Grays clubhouse afterward was subdued, with several players remarking that they had allowed the Mounties to spoil the day for Gibson.
"Some of the boys are beating themselves up about it," Homestead manager Daniel Makonnen said. "They know we win as a team and lose as a team, but it's hard to really put that idea into practice on a day when one of you was playing on such an obviously higher level."
In addition to the homers, Gibson collected 5 RBIs and scored 3 runs.
"I got three pitches down the pipe and popped them," the Homestead catcher told reporters. "Today I was in a groove. Tomorrow I could just pop the same pitches up and go 0-for-3."
Josh Gibson hit a two-run home run off Atlee Hammaker in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Atlee Hammaker in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Bryn Smith in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and walked in the 9th.
Gibson is currently batting .415 with 29 home runs and 95 RBIs.
