Overmire Throws 5-0 Shutout
Sunday, August 19th , 2001
Stubby Overmire of the Memphis Red Sox was on top of his game.
The 25-year-old tantalized the Detroit Wolverines with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," Detroit manager Daniel Makonnen said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Memphis hurler had 7 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 3 hits in his complete-game effort.
Overmire told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
For the season, Overmire has a record of 11 wins and 9 losses in 27 appearances. He has an ERA of 4.27 and has fanned 111 batters in 164.1 innings.
