Monday Powers 3 HR Against New York
Sunday, August 26th , 2001
The old superstition that "bad news comes in threes" certainly came true for the New York Gothams.
Ottawa center fielder Rick Monday tripled up on the home runs to propel the Mounties to a win, 17-3, at Hilltop Park.
"We had our chances to win the game, but we just didn't come through," New York manager Daniel Makonnen said. "Monday hit the heck out of the ball."
In addition to the homers, Monday collected 4 hits in 5 at-bats, 6 RBIs and scored 4 runs.
"Easy swings get you home runs," he said after the game. "I kept telling myself not to press. They have to be nice and easy swings."
Rick Monday struck out in the 1st, singled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Christy Mathewson in the 5th, hit a GRAND SLAM off Guy Hecker in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off Kent Tekulve in the 8th.
Hitting .301 to date, Monday has 29 home runs and 54 RBIs. He has played in 78 games.
