Yankees, Eldred Stonewall Roanake, 5-0
Monday, July 16th , 2001
Cal Eldred of the Staten Island Yankees was on top of his game.
The 25-year-old tantalized the Roanake Black Cardinals with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," Roanake manager Matthew Walthall said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Staten Island hurler had 6 strikeouts, gave up 5 walks and surrendered 1 hit in his complete-game effort.
Eldred told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
For the year, Eldred has a 4-7 record with a 4.29 ERA in 11 starts.
