Black Barons Take Down ABCs, 9-7
The Indianapolis ABCs could not turn a fine performance from catcher Johnny Bench into a win. Instead, the Birmingham Black Barons prevailed, 9-7, in 13 innings. Bench hit 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. The Black Barons, at 61-68, inhabit last place in the National League Marvin Miller Division.

The decisive blow was delivered by Jim Pagliaroni in the bottom of the 13th when he hit a grand slam home run off 31-year old right-handed pitcher Clay Carroll to win the game for Birmingham. The home crowd went nuts.

"If you're not prepared, it's not pressure you feel, it's fear," mused Birmingham manager Daniel Makonnen.
