New York turned a good performance from starting pitcher Christy Mathewson into a 6-1 triumph over the Indianapolis ABCs at Polo Grounds. The winning pitcher was Mathewson, now 7-14. He tossed 6 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 9. New York is now 65-75. Indianapolis is 68-71.
Robby Thompson's at-bat in the bottom of the second inning was a big one for New York. Coming to bat with one out, runners on 1st and 2nd and New York trailing 1-0, the shortstop hit a run-scoring single.
"I felt we were ready to go," said New York manager Daniel Makonnen. "Our pregame was pretty good."
