Gothams Take Nail-Biter Over Grays
The New York Gothams picked up a win at Polo Grounds, knocking off the Homestead Grays, 4-2. On the mound for New York was right-hander Pete Donohue. He played a key role in the triumph. New York reliever Kent Tekulve picked up the win to move to 1-0. Billy Pierce suffered the loss. With the win over Homestead, the Gothams improved to 66-76.

The decisive blow was delivered by Larry Doyle in the bottom of the 11th when he hit a 2-run home run off 30-year old left-handed pitcher Billy Pierce to win the game for New York. The home crowd went nuts.

"It's nice to step up when your team needs you," said Doyle.
