In a low-scoring contest between the Detroit Wolverines and the Portland Sea Dogs, Charlie Root, who is tied for 5th in the AL in quality starts with 3, proved to be the difference. The Detroit right-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-2 Wolverines win. In 6.1 innings, Root surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. He allowed 2 runs. Portland falls to 10-20.
Ty Cobb, who led the AL in batting average with .352 last year, helped out the Detroit cause in the top of the third inning with a 2-run home run. For the game, the left fielder was 1-4 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
"We need to keep playing good baseball," Cobb told the Detroit Bulletin.
