Witches Jolt Grasshoppers, 5-3, with Late Rally
|
The Greensboro Grasshoppers got a superb performance from first baseman Fred Whitfield, but the Wichita Witches still won the game, 5-3. Whitfield was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times. Wichita reliever Roy Mitchell was the winner. His record is now 1-4. The losing pitcher was John Burkett. The win does little to change the fact that Wichita still owns an abominable 17-65 record.
In the bottom of the eighth, with Wichita trailing 3-2, Jimmy Outlaw hit a changeup from Ernie White for a bases-clearing double, giving the Witches the lead, 5-3.
"I warned the team before the game," losing manager Billy Sheeley told reporters, "that I'm wearing the same pair of undies until we win."
