Black Barons Earn 7-2 Home Win
|
The Birmingham Black Barons picked up a win at Rickwood Field, downing the New York Gothams, 7-2. On the mound for Birmingham was right-hander John Malarkey, who played a pivotal role in the win. The winner was Malarkey. He threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball. The loser was Christy Mathewson. The win puts Birmingham at 31-46.
Albert Belle had a big 2-run double for the Black Barons in the bottom of the third inning. With Birmingham leading 2-1 and runners on 1st and 3rd, he got a fastball from Christy Mathewson, who leads the NL in innings pitched with 116.2, and swatted a double to left. It was his 12th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Black Barons ahead, 4-1.
"A confident pitcher is a dangerous thing," said Birmingham manager Daniel Makonnen. "That's what John is right now."
