New York Gothams manager Daniel Makonnen knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 21-year-old right-hander Christy Mathewson silenced the host Cleveland Spiders at League Park today. The Gothams shut out the Spiders by a final score of 2-0, to give the Gothams a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Round 1.

The Gothams liked what they saw from Mathewson. The 21-year old pitcher had a commanding presence on the mound, limiting the Spiders to no runs on 2 hits over 8.2 innings, and striking out 8.

Mathewson attributed the win to his team's "focus and intensity."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland.
