Hornets, Flanagan Stonewall San Diego, 5-0
Thursday, May 31st , 2001
Mike Flanagan of the Charlotte Hornets was on top of his game.
The 32-year-old tantalized the San Diego Padres with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," San Diego manager Omar Person said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Charlotte hurler had 6 strikeouts, gave up 4 walks and surrendered 3 hits in his complete-game effort.
Flanagan told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
