It was not good news for the Royal Giant as as Dave Von Ohlen, a bullpen stalwart for them last season, was diagnosed with a herniated disc and will miss about 3 months. Dutch Leonard was recalled.

In slightly better news, both Germany Smith and Trevor Hildenberger were sent to AAA on rehab assignments as they make their way back from their injuries.

Hildenberger was recalled as Terry Forster was placed on the 10 day DL.

#Homestead Grays

Chris Sabo hit a pinch-hit, walk-off 3-run homerun to lead the Grays to a wild 12-11 victory over Ottawa. Honus Wagner had 4 hits and Rick Reichardt and Andy Van Slyke 3 each in a game where the Grays pounded out 4 homeruns, with Willie Stargell, Reichardt, and Del Crandall joining Sabo.

Josh Gibson‘s first homerun of the season was a doozy: a grand slam to give the Grays another walk-off win over Ottawa, this one 8-5. Roberto Clemente had 3 hits and rookie Doug Drabek continued his strong start to the season with a couple 1-hit innings in relief.

#Ottawa Mounties

Old Hoss Radbourn started the Mounties’ season off strong, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run over 7 innings in a 10-1 drubbing of Philadelphia. Larry Walker drove in 4 and Bob Watson had 3 hits for Ottawa.

The Mounties pounded out 25 hits, scored 11 runs, and held leads in the 8th, 9th, and 10th innings. And, lost 12-11 in 10 innings to Homestead. Walker had 4 hits and Gary Carter drove in 3 in a game where Ottawa’s hurlers gave up 4 homeruns, including a walk-off shot.

Gary Peters will miss about a year with an elbow injury. Bob Brown was recalled from AAA, although for now at least it’s not clear who will take Peters’ spot in the rotation.

#Philadelphia Stars

The Stars may not win many games this year, but there is some talent on this team that should be fun to watch. To wit, OF Aaron Judge obliterated the record for the longest homerun in the history of the WBL, launching a pitch from Homestead’s Bob Friend 558 feet for his first dinger of the year.

Ray Collins lasted 2 innings in his debut before having to be removed with back spasms. Collins will be out a couple of weeks, and the Stars have once again turned to veteran Robin Roberts, giving the 33 year old what may be his final chance at the WBL. The next day, Judge went down with a strained muscle, and the Stars decided to continue to try to reinforce their mounds corps, recalling hard throwing Brad Kilby.

Don Bessent has lost his role as closer for the Black Sox, with that honor now being split between Joe Beggs and Buddy Groom.

Paul Blair threw out a runner at home and launched a grandslam for his 10th homerun of the season, leading the Black Sox to a 6-3 win over Cleveland. Larry Gardner had 3 hits and 2 RBIs and Connie Johnson pitched into the 9th for his first win with Baltimore and Groom got the final 2 outs to pick up his 3rd save of the season.

Dennis Martínez had a solid start, earning his 14th victory of the year in a game where Curt Blefary and Brooks Robinson went deep in a 7-2 win over Cleveland.

The Black Sox kept rolling, pounding out 19 hits in a 13-6 victory in the last game of the series with Cleveland. Bobby Wallace and Baby Doll Jacobson had 3 hits each and Dan McGann and Manny Machado each drove in 3 in a game that saw Bill Byrd improve to 13-3 despite giving up 5 runs in under 6 innings.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Holding onto a slim shot at the playoffs, the Colt 45’s made some changes, abandoning some of their flexibility for some more offensive pop. Jim O’Rourke heads to AAA as Pete Hill is activated from a short stint on the DL.

After another blown save by Brad Lidge–his 7th of the year–Houston decided enough is enough, returning Lidge to AAA and recalling Jay Howell.

Harry Stovey had 4 hits and scored 3 times, but it wasn’t enough as the Colt 45’s fell to Memphis in 12 innings.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Lou Brock‘s year keeps getting better: 3 hits lifted his average to .308, and 4 RBIs led the Monarchs to a 10-2 victory over Ottawa. Ted Simmons drove in 3 runs and a solid start from Luke Hamlin improved his record to 8-11. Brock’s OBP edged over .350, and his OPS is nearing .800, proving he is more than just a set of wheels (although his 45 steals ranks 6th in the league).

#Ottawa Mounties

Clayton Richard pitched 6 strong innings, but left injured after 6 innings of 1 run ball. Chris Leroux, Ryan Dempster, and Gary Peters combined for 5 innings of scoreless relief, and the Mounties eked out 1 2-1 win in 11 innings over Kansas City, with Ken Griffey, Jr. driving in the winning run. Richard hit the DL after the game, with Clark Griffith being recalled.

Sam Thompson will miss the next month–meaning perhaps the rest of the season. Young Julio Gotay was recalled to help out defensively.

Newcomer Connie Johnson steps into the rotation, with Johnny Sain moving to the bullpen and Jim Palmer taking the final spot in the rotation. Lindy McDaniel was returned to AAA.

#Chicago American Giants

While Sonny Dixon‘s injury is still being diagnosed, David Price‘s arrival pushed Chicago to place Dixon on the DL. Clay Condrey‘s 9.00 plus ERA earned a trip to AAA as Hoyt Wilhelm returned from his injury. Price replaced Don Newcombe in the rotation, but the bullpen remains in a bit of disarray as the American Giants await AJ Minter‘s return from shoulder soreness.

While neither have impressed, José Abreu‘s continued struggles at the plate have opened the door for Magglio Ordóñez to receive more playing time down the stretch.

Dixon will miss about 8 months, so the early trip to the DL worked out, from that perspective …

Turns out it’s really hard to overcome 4 errors. Price’s first start was brilliant: 4 hits in just under 6 innings, no earned runs … but 5 runs allowed on miscues by Eddie Collins, Jack Doyle (2), and Jackie Hayes. Ed Walsh and Scott Radinsky were solid in relief, but Wilhelm gave up some key hits and took the loss. Doyle had 4 hits in the game.

Cristóbal Torriente will miss about 2 weeks, prompting Chicago to recall Kevin Mitchell from AAA.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Chad Qualls was recalled from AAA. Other than that, there’s not much change in Houston, other than the continued attempt to spread out plate appearances. This time, Pete Hill seeing more game time means George Brett seeing less.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Adam Russell and Rube Marquard were recalled from AAA, but the Monarchs did little else to reflect their build for the future outlook.

#Ottawa Mounties

Bob Moose and Kirk Reuter moved into the rotation with Clark Griffith heading back to AAA and Greg Holland joining the big league club as the merry-go-round of the Mounties’ staff continues.

Nineteen year old Ken Griffey, Jr. has done everything Ottawa has asked since his demotion, performing well at both AAA and AA. He’s been brought back up to the WBL club as Ottawa retools to see how its youth will progress. Griffey, Jr. will split time with Carlos Beltrán in CF. Trade acquisition George Burns also lands in Ottawa with both Terry Puhl and Phil Bradley heading to AAA in a major reset of the big league OF.

Things looked bleak for Ottawa as Birmingham had the lead 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th when Larry Parrish stepped up and launched his 3rd homerun of the year to tie the game. Randy Johnson and Greg Holland both pitched well in relief, and Beltrán won the game in the 12th with a walkoff grandslam. Tim Raines (who was caught stealing twice) and Anthony Rendon had 3 hits each in the 8-4 victory.

Jeremy Affeldt, a bit of a throw-in at the trade deadline, has been horrible for Ottawa: an ERA over 20 level horrible. So when he refused a demotion to AAA, the Mounties made the sensible move: they released him. Gary Peters was recalled from his injury rehab to take Affeldt’s place.

Ned Garvin continues to be essentially unhittable, allowing 1 unearned run in over 6 innings of work, increasing his record to 8-3 on a 4-1 win over Brooklyn. Manny Machado had 3 hits and Don Bessent picked up his 14th save.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Casey Stengel heads to the DL after spraining his elbow diving for a ball in the series opener against Chicago. Hunter Pence was recalled from AAA San Antonio to take his place on the roster.

It was worse news for Bret Saberhagen, as a partially torn labrum will end the RHPs season. Dock Ellis will return to Houston, attempting to improve on his rough showing earlier in the season.

Andrés Galarraga delivered the first 3 hits of his WBL career including a 3-run homerun to help the Colt 45’s to an 11-5 win in game 3 of their series against Chicago. HR Johnson, George Brett, and Pete Hill also chipped in 3 hits and Stephen Strasburg tossed 6 strong innings to improve his record to 6-5.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Willie McGee and Boog Powell combined for 6 hits, 6 runs, and 7 RBIs in a 16-7 win for the Monarchs over Philadelphia. The win went to Andy Pettitte, who moved to 6-4 with 6 strong innings.

#Ottawa Mounties

Gary Peters will miss about 2 weeks, prompting the Mounties to recall P Clark Griffith from Ottawa while Peters heads to the DL.

There is some cause for hope on the year-long project that is Randy Johnson. The Big Unit put in his best performance of the year with 5 shutout innings against the Black Yankees. Unfortunately, the Mounties’ bullpen couldn’t hold an early 1-0 lead, and Ottawa dropped the game, 5-3.

Two trade acquisitions–SS Freddy Parent and SP Dick Rudolph–were key in the American Giants’8-5 win over Baltimore. Rudolph had a strong start and Parent drove in 3 with a key triple. As importantly, Chicago’s OFers gunned down three runners trying to score, with Joe Jackson nailing 1 and Mike Fiore 2.

The American Giants sent Herb Pennock to AAA, recalling Ed Walsh from his rehab assignment and Jack Doyle from the injured list. Tom Brookens was released and Damian Jackson sent to AAA following his recovery from injury.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Roy Oswalt pitched into the 9th inning and Carlos Correa had 3 hits and 4 RBI’s as Houston topped Kansas City, 8-1. Oswalt evened his record at 6-6 with a strong outing, allowing 8 hits and 1 run in just over 8 innings pitched.

Paul Goldschmidt and Carney Lansford were sent back to AAA, with Andrés Galarraga and reliever Luke Gregerson receiving the call to the big leagues.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Smokey Joe Wood replaces Frank Castillo in the rotation.

#Ottawa Mounties

Clayton Richard had to leave his start injured, landing on the DL for 10 days. Greg Holland, dominant at AAA after being horrible for Ottawa at the start of the year, was recalled. A 3-run HR by Carlos Beltrán was the key hit as the Mounties won the game over Philadelphia, 8-3.

Joe Mays was recalled from AAA for a start, with Bobby Castillo being demoted. Mays was added to the rotation, but that may be very short-term.

A homerun from Gary Carter in the 11th inning led the Mounties to a 3-1 victory over the Stars. The win went to Ted Bowsfield, but Jim Clancy was strong through 5, and Holland (solid since his recall), Gary Peters, and Mays combined with Bowsfield for 6 innings of scoreless relief.

Ken Singleton and Larry Gardner each had 3 hits and each hit a homerun, helping Ned Garvin improve to 7-2 with a 9-2 drubbing of Portland.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Leon Day hit the DL, with Scott Erickson recalled from AAA San Antonio to make a WBL start. Day–who has been quite impressive for a teenager–is done for the season, needing 5 to 6 months to recover from elbow surgery to remove bone chips.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Supported by 3 hits and 2 RBIs from Stan Musial, Connie Johnson, Smokey Joe Wood, and Jeff Pfeffer combined on a 5-hit shutout of Miami. Ducky Medwick also drove in 2 and Lou Brock and Robinson Canó had 2 hits each in the 7-0 victory.

#Ottawa Mounties

Needing a starter, the Mounties sent Monk Dubiel down to AAA, with Gary Peters coming back up to the WBL.

Series XX Best Game: New York Black Yankees @ Indianapolis ABC’s https://wbl.dmlco.com/wp/2022/06/16/series-xx-best-game-new-york-black-yankees-indianapolis-abcs/ Thu, 16 Jun 2022 14:08:37 +0000 https://wbl.dmlco.com/wp/?p=2422 The New York Black Yankees opened their series in Indianapolis with Jack Scott taking the mound while the ABC’s countered with David Price.

Indianapolis took the lead in the bottom of the first, with doubles from Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, and Jake Stenzel (one run scored on Stenzel’s double, the other on a double-play ball from Oscar Charleston).

The 2-0 lead lasted until the top of the 3rd when Babe Ruth launched his 26th homerun of the year, and Mike Schmidt followed with a moon shot of his own. Both homers were 2-run jobs, moving New York ahead, 4-2.

Danny Hoffman scored on an unlikely event–a Hal Morris triple–in the bottom of the 4th, closing the game to 4-3.

Both starting pitchers left after 5 innings, but Schmidt greeted Price’s replacement, Clay Carroll, with his 2nd homerun of the day (an inside-the-park job at that!), re-establishing a 2-run lead for the Black Yankees.

Scott would likely have stayed in the game, but rain began to fall, delaying the bottom of the 5th nearly 90 minutes. This is an issue for New York, as their bullpen has struggled all year. Goose Gossage replaced Scott, giving up a homerun to Joey Votto (the first of his career) in the bottom of the 7th. Gary Lavelle–brought in specifically to help their bullpen–relieved Gossage and immediately got into trouble, walking 2 and giving up a single to Charleston to load the bases. Bench singled, driving in 2, giving Indianapolis their first lead and chasing Lavelle.

Willie Mitchell–stellar so far this season–shut down the Black Yankees while Ralph Citarella didn’t do much better than Gossage and Lavelle, giving up a 2-RBI double to Edd Roush in the bottom of the 8th to push the score to 8-5.

Rob Dibble closed it out, making the game really a battle of the bullpens: New York’s gave up 5 runs in 3 innings while Indianapolis’ only 1 run on 2 hits in 4.

Kent Hrbek hit 2 homeruns, giving him 25 for the season (2nd in the league), and Bobby Murcer hit a 3-run pinch-hit HR in the 9th to fuel the comeback. Baltimore’s Baby Doll Jacobson is slowly adjusting to WBL pitching after dominated AAA, homering twice and driving in 4 in the game in the losing effort.

Gary Peters, recalled from AAA earlier in the day, gave Ottawa 5 shutout innings in their series finale with Detroit, leaving with the Mounties up 5-0 thanks to 3 homeruns in the 3rd inning (Carlos Beltrán, Larry Walker, and Anthony Rendon). It didn’t last, as Detroit scored 4 times in the 7th and twice in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings tied at 6. In the top of the 11th, George Van Haltren (0-15 at that point), hit a game-winning homerun, and two starters–the much maligned Randy Johnson and the surprisingly effective Jim Clancy–closed it out in the bottom of the frame. Detroit’s Chili Davis tied a league record with 5 hits.

TWIWBL 24.15: Mid-Season Reviews – Ottawa Mounties https://wbl.dmlco.com/wp/2022/04/26/twiwbl-24-15-mid-season-reviews-ottawa-mounties/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 15:05:19 +0000 https://wbl.dmlco.com/wp/?p=2208 Summary

Ottawa is a team in constant struggle without enough talent to maintain much optimism for the second half.

What’s Gone Right

When It Raines. Tim Raines was probably the most egregious omission from the all-star game, hitting over .300 and leading the league in steals.

The Corners. Carlos Delgado and Anthony Rendon have been quite solid at the corners, even with a slump from Rendon towards the end of the first half.

Top Two, Eventually. Roy Halladay has been consistent from the get-go, but it took a while for the Mounties to realize what they had in veteran Jamie Moyer. Now, the two of them form a solid top of the rotation for a pitching staff that has struggled otherwise.

What’s Gone Wrong

Larry Walker. The fantastically talented outfielder has been a one man wrecking crew, with an OPS around 150 points above the next best on the team (see below). So why is Larry Walker listed here? He’s hit the DL twice, only appearing in 16 games for the Mounties so far.

Backstops. Gary Carter has improved lately, but still the backstop duo of him and Emil Gross has struggled all season.

Cutting Losses. The raw talent of Álex Rodríguez and Ken Griffey, Jr. is obvious to anyone that watches them. But they just aren’t ready for the WBL yet and it took Ottawa a long time to decide to send them to AAA. CF remains an issue for the team, although Freddy Parent has done well at SS.

Key Storylines

Tom Henke‘s injury has opened up the door for Gary Lavelle to serve as a closer for Ottawa–or for someone else.

Two players–Raines and Halladay–are on the verge of establishing themselves as true stars in the league, and with little on the line for the team, individual stories will dominate the second half for Ottawa.

Trading Outlook

SELLING. Selling, selling, selling.

The fire sale is on as the Mounties look to the future. Moyer, Lavelle, and Delgado are the biggest chips they have to cash in, but there are some others, including perhaps all-star shortstop Parent.

AAA Shuttle

Not great. Jackie Jensen did well, but this is a team with revolving doors at a lot of positions.

Midseason Changes

Gary Peters goes back to AAA as Monk Dubiel returns from the injured list.

Roy Sievers, George Cutshaw, and Rick Monday all head to AAA with John Olerud, George Van Haltren, and Roberto Alomar coming up to the big leagues.

Frank Thomas hit 2 homeruns and drove in 4 runs supporting Mark Buehrle in a 9-1 victory over Kansas City. Buehrle allowed 1 run in over 7 innings, evening his record at 5-5 and Eddie Collins had 2 hits and scored 3 times for Chicago.

Recent call-ups Rocky Colavito and Magglio Ordóñez hit their first homeruns of the year, with Colavito going deep twice, leading the American Giants in a 7-3 victory over Kansas City. Tricky Nichols moved to 8-2 on the year with the complete game victory.

Fernando Rodney was returned to AAA to clear room for Cristóbal Torriente‘s activation from the DL.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Jim O’Rourke doubled home a run in the bottom of the 13th, giving Houston a 2-1 victory over Birmingham. Bret Saberhagen pitched fantastically over 8.2 innings, allowing only 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 8. The win went to Trevor Hoffman, who improved to 4-0 with 3 innings of perfect relief.

Dock Ellis was sent to AAA as Leon Day returned to Houston from the Disabled List.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Adam Wainwright was placed on the DL as a precautionary measure, with Joe Blong joining the Monarchs’ staff from AAA.

#Ottawa Mounties

Needing a starter, the Mounties returned Johnny Podgajny to AAA and recalled Gary Peters.

Thirty-five year old Jamie Moyer continued to impress, tossing a 5-hit, complete game shutout against Baltimore , improving his record to 4-3 and lowering his ERA under 4.00. Anthony Rendon and Gary Carter each homered and drove in 2 runs with 2 hits, leading the Mounties to the 6-0 win.

Series XVII Featured Game: Birmingham Black Barons @ Houston Colt 45’s https://wbl.dmlco.com/wp/2021/12/08/series-xvii-featured-game-birmingham-black-barons-houston-colt-45s/ Wed, 08 Dec 2021 21:45:03 +0000 https://wbl.dmlco.com/wp/?p=2022 We’re going to focus on the usual see-saw affair, this one between the Birmingham Black Barons and Houston’s Colt 45‘s, pitting Birmingham’s Tim Hudson against Houston’s Stephen Strasburg.

It’s an interesting matchup: Hudson was seen as pretty washed-up, but the 36-year old has posted a 5-0 record with an ERA in the mid 2.00’s, and could begin appearing on league leaderboards within a few starts. Strasburg, on the other hand, has shown great promise at only 23, but has yet to harness his potential, posting a 2-4 record with an ERA in the low 4.00’s.

The two hurlers were at the top of their game, and we saw a scoreless contest into the bottom of the 5th when a solo homerun from Jim O’Rourke gave Houston a 1-0 lead. Houston missed a chance to double their lead when HR Johnson missed on a suicide squeeze attempt, leaving Craig Biggio to be easy pickings at home.

The Black Barons would finally touch Strasburg in the top of the 7th, when Hank Aaron launched a 2 run homerun, scoring Curtis Granderson to put Birmingham in front. They would add another run in the 8th, scoring against Mark Melancon when an RBI single from Tom Herr plated Omar Infante for a 3-1 lead, and then another in the 9th when Eddie Mathews took Melancon deep.

So. 4-1 Birmingham. But Hudson was gassed at this point after a marvelous effort: 8 innings, 5 hits, and only the single run allowed. But, Birmingham’s closer, Carlos Díaz, wasn’t an option. So the Black Barons turned to Harley Young to close the door.

It went OK at first: Jim Wynn led off the bottom of the 9th with a single, but Johnson grounded out, and after consecutive singles loaded the bases, Lance Berkman struck out. So, bases loaded, 2 outs.

Young gave up an RBI single to Jorge Posada, prompting Birmingham to bring in hard-throwing Steve Bedrosian … who promptly surrendered a walk-off, grand-slam, homerun to Casey Stengel.

Melancon, who did not pitch very well, improved his record to a stunning 7-1 out of the bullpen, while Birmingham ended up with nothing to show for Hudson’s great effort.

Granderson had 2 hits for Birmingham, while Jeff Bagwell and Tony Gwynn had 2 each for Houston.

BBB 4 (Young 0-4; Bedrosian 2 BSv) @ HOU 6 (Melancon 7-1)

Other Noteworthy Games

The Ottawa Mounties turned to Gary Peters, freshly back from AAA, to take on Ned Garvin of the Baltimore Black Sox, who is making an argument for the best pitcher in the WBL at the moment: this certainly seemed like a mismatch. But it was Ottawa, perhaps enlivened by the return of Larry Walker from the DL, who held the lead, 4-3, heading into the 9th. Curt Blefary turned it around with a 2-run shot, Brian Roberts added another RBI, and while they gave up a run in the bottom of the frame, Baltimore’s bullpen held on.

A 6-run Homestead comeback in the bottom of the 8th, keyed by homeruns from Tom Brown and Rick Reichardt, went for naught as Yasiel Puig hit his third homerun of the day in the 9th inning to give the New York Gothams the win. Puig tied the league record for homeruns in a game and picked up 6 RBIs, while Mike Epstein and Reichardt each had 3 hits for the Grays. While note involved in the decision, the Gothams’ Gaylord Perry was fantastic through 5 innings, allowing only 1 unearned run.

When the Los Angeles Angels closed out their series against the San Francisco Sea Lions, they were looking to salvage a series split and, perhaps as importantly, to find out more about what they have in young Nolan Ryan, who has been a bit erratic since moving into the starting rotation. Ryan delivered a typical “good” performance for him: 5 innings, 2 hits (but 7 walks), and no runs. San Francisco’s Eddie Plank turned in another strong start, going 7.2 innings allowing only 2 runs. So the Angels took a 2-1 lead into the 9th. And then the wheels fell off for both teams: Los Angeles rocked Ron Robinson for four runs, the key hit being a 2-out, bases loaded triple from Doug Rader. But two of the Angels better bullpen arms–Jonny Venters and closer Joe Nathan–couldn’t hold it, with Mickey Cochrane, who seems perpetually on the verge of being sent to AAA, ending the contest with a walk-off 3 run homerun.
