Season Preview: Miami Cuban Giants

This team is a bit of a conundrum. If all goes well, there is a lot of talent here, but they could also be quite mediocre. A lot depends on whether Eustaquio Pedroso can really emerge as a front-of-the-rotation starter behind Rube Waddell. Aroldis Chapman is lights out in the bullpen, and the offense should be respectable, although it’s hard to find a truly standout talent at this point.

As expected, Jose Mendez heads to AAA to try to develop his immense potential … Tommy Bridges and Dontrelle Willis were neck-and-neck for the final rotation slot, with Bridges veteran status giving him the edge over the 24 year old Willis … John Munyan and defensive whiz Charlie Bennett will split the duties at C, with Bennett’s glove edging out Andy Ashby‘s utility as a switch hitter … the final cut was quite complicated: 17 year old Martin Dihigo is a defensive whiz across the spectrum and Alejandro Oms provides that same ability in the OF. But neither really hit all that well, although Oms certainly has the tools to do so. Still, they allow the Cuban Giants such flexibility that keeping them is highly attractive. That makes the choice boil down to Ryan Braun and Willie Kamm. Kamm’s roller coaster of a Spring–from the hottest player in the league to a deathly cold finish–sends him off to the minors … Jose Canseco, Oms, and Yonder Alonso form a platoon trio, with Alonso playing v LHP and Oms v RHP and Canseco moving between RF and DH.

1B Joe Adcock is winding down his career at 38 and SP Tommy Bridges at 36 is no spring chicken. At the other end is Dihigo at 17 and 2 SP–Eustaquio Pedroso and Ramon Martinez–at 21.

Mendez should be the 1st starter recalled from AAA, while Gary Sheffield, Yasiel Puig, and Evan Longoria are also all waiting there for their opportunity. At AA, the brightest lights are a pair of 2B, 18 year old Clete Boyer and 24 year old Tony Taylor.

Season Preview: Detroit Wolverines

It’s hard to see the Wolverines making a lot of noise. The pitching staff-at least after Hal Newhouser–is pretty nondescript, and right now the offense is dependent on the Bailey Boys–Ed and Bob, that is. Still, if Jimmy Collins and Hank Greenberg can perform at their peak potential, and if Ty Cobb does anything at all, maybe there is something here.

Mark Dewey was set down, which juggled the bullpen quite a bit, and allowed John Hiller–despite only 2 IP on the Spring–to make the opening day roster … it’s unclear if Si Johnson will be healthy in time for his first start; if not look for Justin Verlander or Johnny Marcum to get the ball … despite a horrid Spring slump, the Wolverines maintain faith in Ty Cobb, although the 20 year old has slid down the depth chart. Still, he is retained on the roster over Jody Gerut … Hank Greenberg finally showed signs of recovery this Spring, retaining the starting role at 1B … while the Wolverines don’t have any true platoons, Tony Phillips will move between 2B and LF, allowing Robby Thompson and Geoff Jenkins to play.

37 year old 2B/LF Tony Phillips came out of nowhere to earn a starting spot. Two 20 year olds made the roster in rotation ace Hal Newhouser and OF Ty Cobb.

1B Nate Colbert and P Clyde Passeau are most likely to help from AAA. There’s not a lot at AA: perhaps 2 of the young SS, 20 year old Donie Bush or 18 year old Alfredo Griffin will turn into something.

Season Preview: Houston Colt 45’s

Houston is a dark horse to do something this year with a starting rotation that looks solid led by Roy Oswalt and an offense that is good top to bottom, anchored by the talents of Tony Gwynn, George Brett, and the intriguing potential of HR Johnson.

The final rotation spot goes to Bret Saberhagen … Most of the other cuts were obvious due to poor Spring performances: Andres Galarraga and Luis Gonzalez were especially disappointing … several players rebounded over the 2nd half of the Spring: Larry Hisle was red hot after a short stint in minor league camp, and Jeff Bagwell began to hit with some power … all of that made the final cut very hard, coming down, effectively, to DJ LeMahieu and Craig Biggio. Biggio stays due to his ability to fill in at some other positions, despite LeMahieu being older (27 to 25) and looking better at bat … Biggio’s ability to catch may come in handy early as Jim O’Rourke works his way back from injury.

34 year old C Jorge Posada is the oldest player on the opening day roster, which sports 2 teenagers in the starting rotation: 18 year old Ice Box Chamberlain and 19 year old Bret Saberhagen.

Speaking of teenagers .. 17 year old OF Pete Hill and 18 year old P Leon Day are developing at AAA (although Stubby Overmire–at the ripe old age of 23–may be of more immediate help). Things are a bit leaner at AA, but a trio of OFers, all 24 years old, may help down the road: Shin-Soo Choo, Al Cowens, and Hack Wilson.

Season Preview: New York Black Yankees

There is so much undeniable talent here that the Black Yankees have to be seen as preseason favorites in the WBL. Maybe the pitching staff collapses, but with all that offense, will it even matter? There is–or course–the 24 year old Babe Ruth, but this is also a team where Don Mattingly bats 8th and where Albert Belle has a hard time finding ABs.

Jack Scott earned the last slot in the rotation … with 17 walks in 23 IP, Whitey Ford punched his ticket to AAA, although he should be back pretty soon … Fritz Coumbe‘s twisted ankle also sends him to AAA … Sparky Lyle and Goose Gossage are both back from injury, with Lyle having the edge as closer to start the season … Manny Sanguillen and Smoky Burgess were almost equivalent offensively, so Sanguillen’s better defense keeps him on the roster … Red Rolfe‘s being sent back to AAA was expected, despite his stellar performance … Aaron Judge‘s was not, as Judge was seen as having a lock on the RF job, but Charlie Keller‘s flexibility and similar Spring performance earned him an opening day spot … importantly, this paves the way for the Black Yankees to get Don Mattingly, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Eric Davis all in the lineup at the same time.

35 year old P AJ Burnett is the elder statesman of the roster with 20 year old Mickey Mantle the youngest to make it to opening day.

Despite rough Springs, both 3B Chris Brown and P Jim Clinton look to be among the first recalled from AAA. 21 year old C Bill Dickey is turning some heads as well. At AA, 20 year old 1B Prince Fielder is the highest touted prospect.

Season Preview: Portland Sea Dogs

The Sea Dogs look to have a strong pitching staff, led by Smokey Joe Wood and Dizzy Trout, but their success may have more to do with whether Walter Johnson can cash in on his immense promise sooner rather than later. The offense looks solid end-to-end, but lacks real star power unless someone (Gil Hodges? Bobby Murcer?) really has a breakout season.

There was virtually nothing to distinguish between Bert Blyleven and Mike Cuellar, with Portland naming Blyleven the 5th starter … there’s a lot of talent being sent to AAA: Connie Ryan hit quite well at 2B and Rafael Palmiero is a legitimate WBL starter at 1B caught in a massive logjam of talent … the final cut ended up being P Ray Fontenot who performed adequately, but was caught in the numbers game … C ends up being a platoon between Joe Mauer and Ivan Rodriguez … at some point, we would expect Portland to go to 12 pitchers, as both Smokey Joe Wood and Walter Johnson can help in pinch-hitting duties.

Portland sports one of the younger rosters in the leauge, with 30 year old P Mike Cueller and 30 year old OF Kiki Cuyler the elders of the roster. Two of the starting rotation–Walter Johnson and Bert Blyleven–are 19 years old.

19 year old Joseito Munoz doesn’t look to stay at AAA for very long. A trio of teenagers at AA hold promise as well: C Frankie Hayes, LF Kenny Hogan, and P Rick Wise.

Season Preview: Wandering House of David

There is a lot of talent throughout this organization, but they may be a year or two away from being real contenders. The bullpen seems solid, and CC Sabathia and Nick Altrock look like true front of rotation arms. The offense looks solid, but the real story is the amount of talent top to bottom under the age of 24.

Dick Tidrow did barely enough to keep a roster spot in the bullpen, which was just about the only question is a fairly settled pitching staff, although he is most likely to be sent down when Lee Smith comes off the DL … Gabby Hartnett has been so miserable in Spring Training that not only has he lost the starting C spot to Elrod Hendricks, there was an argument that Frank Chance deserved the backup role. Hartnett’s glove keeps him on the roster … Dan Ford cooled off towards the end of Spring Training, leaving him in AAA to start the season … the final cuts were pretty difficult. With roster space at a premium, the luxury of a lefty specialist is hard to justify, sending Arnold Carter to AAA … then you have the case of Dick Lundy and Frank Grant. Both of these 20 year olds have great futures ahead of them, but there isn’t room on the roster for both of them right now, and Grant’s slightly better bat keeps him on the roster for now … finally, a moment for Robinson Cano, who hit .373 this Spring and still couldn’t earn a roster spot.

34 year old P Dick Tidrow is the oldest player on the opening day roster (if he gets sent down, it’s 32 year old Joakim Soria), with 20 year olds 3B Ron Santo and 2B Frank Grant the youngest.

Lundy and C Frank Chance are the best prospects at AAA, with 19 year old Cap Anson not likely to stay at AA very long.

Season Preview: Cleveland Spiders

Not a lot was expected of the Spiders heading into this season. And that was before 2 rotation starters and their starting C and CF were all injured. The bullpen looks strong, and there is some decent offensive talent, just not enough to convince. A lot hinges on whether Rowland Office can continue the level of performance that forced him onto the roster.

Anticipated opening day starter Whit Wyatt headed to the DL with a herniated disk. He’ll be back within a couple weeks, but it throws what was a settled rotation into a bit of disorder … it does keep both Sudden Sam McDowell and Stan Coveleski on the roster for a while as well … The Spiders start the season with a full DL, with Doug Corbett, Phenomenal Smith, Bill Steen, Louis Santop, Sammy Strang, and Tris Speaker all out. Corbett, Steen, and Strang should all be back around the same time as Wyatt … Santop’s injury moves John Ellis into the starting C slot and keeps Andy Etchebarren on the roster for the time being … Rowland Office has gone from Spring roster filler to starting LF after a 385/418/673 Spring, challenging the Spiders to find playing time for both him and Johnny Bates … the final cut was a bit of a shock, as Kenny Lofton looked to slot right in as Speaker’s replacement. Instead, Cleveland has opted for an OF with Office, Bates, Larry Doby, and Ron Blomberg splitting time … the dearth of production at SS has Cleveland trying to engineer a deal for Ottawa’s Freddy Parent …

35 year old P Stan Coveleski is the oldest player on the opening day roster, with 19 year old SP Bob Feller the youngest.

1B is quite deep for Cleveland, with Jim Thome and Hal Trosky waiting at AAA for a chance to contributed and 20 year old Charlie Grimm biding his time at AA.

Season Preview: New York Gothams

The Gothams look to have one of the strongest pitching staffs in the league, and assuming that holds up, they should go far this season. The lineup looks solid–one of the keys is whether Buster Posey can continue to perform at an elite level offensively.

Buck O’Brien imploded at the end of Spring Training, making him the final cut from the pitching staff … despite limited appearances in the Spring, Carl Hubbell will slide into the 5th rotation spot once he’s back from injury … Will Clark‘s injury proved decisive, and he’ll start the year at AAA … The final cut, after OF Carlos Moran, is quite a challenge: at the end of the day, the Gothams have decided to leverage their expected strength on their pitching staff and go with 11 arms, sending Sergio Romo down.

35 year old RP Mike Norris is the oldest player on the opening day roster, with 20 year old SP Christy Mathewson the youngest.

The Gothams loved what Moran offered in the OF, but the 20 year old needs a little more experience. The most likely immediate help at AAA would come from SP Pete Donohue or OF Benny Kauff. 1B Hi Myers might be closest to contributing from AA.

Season Preview: Baltimore Black Sox

It’s hard to see Baltimore as contenders although, like many teams, the pitching will determine how far they go. The rotation could be quite strong, anchored by Johnny Sain and Mark Baldwin. The team is quite strong defensively; the question is if players like Bobby Wallace and Paul Blair will hit enough to keep their gloves on the field.

All Milt Pappas had to do was be mediocre, and he would have a roster spot sewn up. Instead, he was pounded, as was Don Aase, leaving the Black Sox with only 10 pitchers deserving of WBL slots … Bill Byrd looks to be back from injury before opening day, so he’ll claim a spot. The other goes to veteran Buddy Groom, recalled from AAA to add some depth to the bullpen … Don Bessent and Bob Miller look to split the closer duties, with Bessant being slightly more effective at the moment … a few of the final cuts were determined more by age than performance: 21 year old Cal Ripken, Jr. and 22 year old Bill Sweeney each performed well enough to earn a roster spot, but will start the season in AAA … 19 year old Bryce Harper was just brought to camp to get a taste of it. Instead he hit 375/432/775 and will start the season in RF … Harper’s success prevents the Black Sox from keeping 3 Cs, leaving Tom Haller–who hit .412 in Spring Training–on the outside looking in behind both Ramon Hernandez and Curt Blefary on the depth chart … Harlond Clift edges out Brooks Robinson for the starting job at 3B

36 year old 1B Dan McGann is the oldest player on the opening day roster, with 19 year old OF Bryce Harper the youngest (Frank Robinson is 20).

Eddie Murray and Mike Mussina were both expected to make the opening day roster: the pair of 21 year olds are still expected to return to Baltimore quickly after starting the season at AAA. There’s not a lot of talent at AA: perhaps the best is 2B Asdrubal Cabrera.

Season Preview: Ottawa Mounties

The bullpen looks absolutely excellent, which is good given some open questions in the starting rotation. There is some good top end talent here, but the OF is a little suspect. This is a very young team, with 7 players under 22 to start the season. The team has 2 young players at SS who look WBL ready in Alex Rodriguez and Freddy Parent.

The power of Randy Johnson‘s left arm prevailed, and he edged out Old Hoss Radbourn for the final rotation slot. Bob Brown struggled, so Hoss may see some starts yet … in a surprise announcement, Tom Henke surged past Ted Bowsfield (who was anointed only after Karl Spooner struggled) to open the season as the closer … Henke and Greg Holland combined to toss 23 scoreless innings in the Spring … The Mounties have decided to go with 11 pitchers (at least until Larry Walker comes of the DL in about a week)–we’ll see if that works, with Ryan Dempster being sent to AAA despite a decent Spring … C Kirt Manwaring beat out an infield hit in his final at-bat of the Spring to avoid pulling a collar for the duration (it was not enough to save him from being sent to AAA) … Emil Gross beat out Gary Carter for the starting C spot … Carlos Delgado will start at 1B … Steve Garvey doesn’t really have a position, but hit enough to open the season at DH.

35 year old RP Gary Lavelle is the oldest player on the opening day roster, with 19 year old CF Ken Griffey, Jr. the youngest (Carter, Garvey, and Alex Rodriguez are all 20).

19 year old 1B John Mayberry and 3B Josh Donaldson (one of the final Spring cuts) are the most likely to receive a call from AAA. At AA, Spooner is expected to recover, and 22 year old Wee Willie Keeler should contribute down the road.
