Season Preview: Philadelphia Stars

The pitching staff looks good, but struggled all Spring. The performances of Steve Carlton and Pete Alexander at the back of the rotation will tell a lot about how far Philadelphia can go. Mike Schmidt‘s demotion to AAA may be the absolute shock of the Spring: he was expected to pair with Gavvy Cravath and Buck Freeman to anchor the Stars’ offense. The team is especially light up the middle, and could try to engineer a trade.

All of the rotation starters for the Stars can through a ton of innings, allowing Philadelphia to enter the season with 11 pitchers, sending both Brad Kilby and Jack Katoll to the minors … there are questions about Jack Meyer‘s control in pressure situations, leading to him and Rheal Cormier trading roles, but aside from that the staff looks solid … opening with 1 less arm wasn’t enough to save Mike Schmidt‘s roster spot as the 27 year old 3B struggled through a miserable Spring, although he did show some power. Instead, 3B will fall to a mixture of Scott Rolen and Al Smith to start the season … SS Mickey Doolin‘s return from injury will probably shake things up a bit … the Stars’ lineup will probably change: the platoons between Mike Scioscia and Sherm Lollar at C, Chase Utley and Gene DeMontreville at 2B, and Willie Davis and George Hendrick in CF could resolve if either player really seizes the opportunity.

36 year old professional hitter Rico Carty is the oldest player on the roster while a pair of 19 year olds–OF Sherry Magee and P Monte Ward–are the youngest.

It’s hard to see either 1B Cecil Cooper or 3B Mike Schmidt staying at AAA for long, but there’s not a lot of help on the mound there. LF Dan Pasqua and 3B Jose Ramirez are the brightest prospects at AA.

Season Preview: San Francisco Sea Lions

Not the easiest team to figure out … the pitching has been fantastic, but not from the expected slots: Cy Falkenberg, Dennis Eckersley, and James Shields were supposed to help out in the bullpen and Lefty Grove, Charlie Root, and Eddie Plank were supposed to anchor the rotation; instead Spring reversed their roles. Sparked by Rickey Henderson and Jack Clark, the offense looks strong, but either Pete Browning or, especially, Mickey Cochrane need to chip in as well.

With the pitching staff settled, the last week of Spring training for the Sea Lions was focused on the rest of the roster … the situation at C is pretty dire. Gene Oliver hit the best, but at 234/321/298 that’s not saying much. Cy Perkins flashed some leather, but hit barely more than Mickey Cochrane, who had about as bad a Spring as you can imagine. So, what to do? Oliver makes the team, and Cochrane and he will platoon to start the season … OF Tony Armas was given every chance to impress, but did not … and then it gets rough: almost everyone else hit quite well, making the choices hard–for example, Sal Bando looked good enough to start on many teams, but heads to AAA … 2B is even more difficult: Jimmy Bloodworth, Ron Hunt, and Dick Green all hit over .350 with Bloodworth and Green playing good defense as well. With Bando’s demotion, Hunt’s ability to play 3B would be useful, leaving Green–the youngest of the bunch at 22–the odd man out.

One of the younger teams in the league, at 32 Eddie Joost is the oldest player on the roster and 18 year old John Beckwith the youngest.

As mentioned, Sal Bando is ready at AAA, but the brightest light there is likely 20 year old Jimmie Foxx, with Bump Hadley ready should the pitching staff need assistance. OF Del Unser and 18 year old C Dave Duncan look to be the brightest lights at AA.

Season Preview: Los Angeles Angels

The presence of Mike Trout will cover a host of sins, but unless he gets some help from the likes of Derrek Lee or Bobby Grich, it could be a long year in the city of angels. The pitching staff could be solid, especially up front behind Doc Gooden and Gerrit Cole.

SP Mike Smith just didn’t do enough to earn a bullpen spot, but Darren Holmes‘ demotion to AAA came as more of a surprise, a factor of the numbers game more than Holmes’ performance … it also speaks to Los Angeles’ faith that both Nolan Ryan and Chuck Finley will contribute from the bullpen … OFs Carlos Beltran and Jeromy Burnitz were the final roster cuts, but there really wasn’t a lot to choose from between them, Kal Daniels, and Elmer Valo … that leaves the Angels without a real backup at 3B: Don Buford has taken some reps here, but that’s it behind Doug Rader … Rusty Staub, Valo, and Daniels rotate through DH and the OF, leaving the Angels susceptible to RHP: a RH DH candidate would be a welcome addition … while not in a platoon, Brian Downing and John Stearns should split the C duties, with Downing also seeing occasional time in the OF.

At 34 years old, Elmer Valo is the oldest Angel while, at 19, Rusty Staub is the only teenager on the roster (Mike Trout is 20).

Most of the talent likely to help from AAA saw some action in the Spring, with SP Tom Seaver and Mike Smith and C Jim Stephens topping the list. At AA, 18 year old P Blue Moon Odom and a pair of 22 year old IF, Wally Backman and Xander Bogaerts head the prospect list.

Season Preview: Birmingham Black Barons

There are the makings of a good offense here, but the pitching is riddled with question marks, and the defense is easily the worst in the league. Still, Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews look solid, and if Emil Frisk can continue to hit like he has this Spring, they should score their share of runs.

The bullpen has an interesting construction for Birmingham. With 3 starters unlikely to go deep in ballgames (Alejandro Pena, Fred Fussell, and Scott Baker), there is a need to eat innings, meaning the Black Barons may turn quite often to the quartet of Hoyt Wilhelm (who has struggled all Spring), Sam Streeter, John Clarkson, and Jim Whitney … Dale Murphy had a horrible Spring, but Del Crandall was even worse, preserving Murphy’s spot on the roster behind Gene Tenace at C … another team struggling at SS, where Omar Infante came out of nowhere to win the starting job, with Troy Tulowitzki‘s glove edging out Herman Long in reserve … it wouldn’t be surprising for Birmingham to make some trades as, in addition to SS, LF is an area of real need. Currently, Hank Aaron looks like the starter, but he’s better suited to RF than LF … that said, the severity of Emil Frisk‘s yet-to-be-diagnosed injury could have an impact here as well … Ginger Beaumont held off Curtis Granderson to keep the starter’s role in CF.

39 year old IF Chipper Jones is winding down his career and is the oldest player on the roster by 7 years (ahead of P Fred Fussell and 1B Frank McCormick). OF Hank Aaron and 3B Eddie Mathews both look to have long careers ahead of them, projected as starters at 21 years old each.

There is some decent talent at AAA, led by 21 year old C phenom Earl Battey. At the same age, both Greg Maddux and Vic Willis could help on the mound, although John Malarkey may be more polished. 19 year old 3B Billy Nash is the brightest light at AA.

This Chicago team looks dangerous. The pitching staff is deep with an impressive front 3 in Ben Sheets, Lee Meadows, and Joe Lake and the offense has a ton of top tier talent, especially if Mike Fiore or Duffy Lewis can continue their Spring production.

It’s not clear how permanent it is, but for now Tricky Nichols will fill the 5th spot in the rotation … in a shock move, the American Giants promoted IF Damian Jackson from AAA to the big league roster despite him not seeing a single AB in the Spring: the performances of 2B Nellie Fox and SS Julio Gotay were that bad … Bob Watson did well, the problem for him was he offered little Kevin Mitchell didn’t, and Mitchell hit just that much better … the final position player was harsh, as Avisail Garcia did everything asked of him all Spring, slashing 326/408/372. But he was at the bottom of the OF pack, with Cristobal Torriente offering more both at bat and with the glove … Victor Cruz pitched quite well, but was sent down with Chicago’s decision to go with 11 pitchers …

RP Koji Uehara is one of the oldest players in the league at 39 while OF Cristobal Torriente is one of the youngest at 17.

Frank Smith is likely to be recalled if the pitching staff needs reinforcements while Bob Watson would be first in line to help offensively from AAA. Three players have been turning heads at AA: 21 year old 2B Rickie Weeks, who got an extended look in Spring Trianing, and a pair of 23 year olds, OF Magglio Ordonez and RP Scott Radinsky.

Season Preview: Brooklyn Royal Giants

It could be a really long year in Brooklyn. There is talent here, but most of it is aimed at the future. It is possible the starting rotation is better than anticipated, and closer Watty Clark was dominant during the Spring. But the offense … there just isn’t a lot here unless a couple players join Duke Snider in creating runs at a high level.

Sandy Koufax was a long shot to make the roster after missing most of the Spring through injury, but he didn’t last an inning in a final start, making the choice pretty easy … Frank Knauss joins Koufax at AAA, meaning Dick Redding earns the final bullpen slot … opening day starter Dutch Leonard was the worst of the Royal Giants’ Spring starters, which could be a good witch or a bad witch … none of the rest of the cuts were particularly dramatic, which is a problem for Brooklyn: when 5 players finish the Spring with OPS under .700 and none of them have their roster spots threatened, there are warning flags flying … 2 of those are Tommy Corcoran and Pee Wee Reese, making Brooklyn another team in search of a better SS, and 2 others are Ron Cey and Jim Delahanty, making them also desperate for a 3B upgrade … 2 bright spots from the Spring: neither Raul Mondesi nor Davey Lopes were scheduled to make the roster, both hit well enough to force themselves into the starting lineup.

SS Pee Wee Reese is the veteran leader at 35, followed by 34 year old SP Brickyard Kennedy. Dick Redding is the only teen on the roster at 19.

There is talent at AAA, with 24 year old SS Dickie Thon the most likely to get a chance, given the poor performance of the current crop at SS. On the mound, the final 2 cuts–Frank Knauss and Sandy Koufax–are likely to get a chance. AA is a bit bare, although the 3 teenagers–3B Tim Foli, SS Sonny Jackson, and P Hilly Flitcroft all have time to develop.

Season Preview: Kansas City Monarchs

Kansas City feels like a team more for the future than the present. The pitching staff looks strong enough, led by Andy Pettite, but there are some questions about the bullpen as a whole. The lineup is potent, and the trio of Rogers Hornsby, Stan Musial, and Albert Pujols should provide some elite offense.

Jeff Pfeffer beat out Trevor Rosenthal for the closer role going into the regular season … Charlie Comiskey went from Spring Training inning eater to bullpen contributor … Salvador Perez is the starting C, with Ted Simmons‘ ability to hit from both sides of the plate salvaging his spot on the roster as the backup … Ken Oberkfell showed very well in a limited chance, but at the end of the day, Jack Rowe‘s injury forced the Monarchs to keep Rex Hudler, who can also backup Ozzie Smith at SS. Once Rowe comes off the DL in about a week, Oberkfell may be recalled … many teams would appreciate the versatility of Mark DeRosa, but with Hudler and Gene Freese, he’s really redundant for Kansas City, and starts the year in AAA … the lineups are a little fluid, but basically Andre Thornton plays 1B against RHP, Lou Brock plays LF against LHP, and Albert Pujols, Boog Powell, and Freese move around with some flexibility between LF, 3B, 1B, and DH.

This is a young team with only 6 players over 30. The 3 oldest players are all in the rotation: Rube Marquard at 34 and Luke Hamlin and Connie Johnson each at 33. There are 4 21 year olds on the opening day roster: P Frank Castillo, OFs Stan Musial and Albert Pujols, and C Ted Simmons.

If Bob Gibson can find the strike zone, he may be the 1st pitcher recalled from AAA. 2 Cs with high ceilings are also at that level: 17 year old Johnny Bassler and 21 year old Lew Brown. Down at AA, 19 year old OF Cool Papa Bell and IFs Bill Bradley and Kolten Wong look the most likely to develop into impact players.

Season Preview: Miami Cuban Giants

This team is a bit of a conundrum. If all goes well, there is a lot of talent here, but they could also be quite mediocre. A lot depends on whether Eustaquio Pedroso can really emerge as a front-of-the-rotation starter behind Rube Waddell. Aroldis Chapman is lights out in the bullpen, and the offense should be respectable, although it’s hard to find a truly standout talent at this point.

As expected, Jose Mendez heads to AAA to try to develop his immense potential … Tommy Bridges and Dontrelle Willis were neck-and-neck for the final rotation slot, with Bridges veteran status giving him the edge over the 24 year old Willis … John Munyan and defensive whiz Charlie Bennett will split the duties at C, with Bennett’s glove edging out Andy Ashby‘s utility as a switch hitter … the final cut was quite complicated: 17 year old Martin Dihigo is a defensive whiz across the spectrum and Alejandro Oms provides that same ability in the OF. But neither really hit all that well, although Oms certainly has the tools to do so. Still, they allow the Cuban Giants such flexibility that keeping them is highly attractive. That makes the choice boil down to Ryan Braun and Willie Kamm. Kamm’s roller coaster of a Spring–from the hottest player in the league to a deathly cold finish–sends him off to the minors … Jose Canseco, Oms, and Yonder Alonso form a platoon trio, with Alonso playing v LHP and Oms v RHP and Canseco moving between RF and DH.

1B Joe Adcock is winding down his career at 38 and SP Tommy Bridges at 36 is no spring chicken. At the other end is Dihigo at 17 and 2 SP–Eustaquio Pedroso and Ramon Martinez–at 21.

Mendez should be the 1st starter recalled from AAA, while Gary Sheffield, Yasiel Puig, and Evan Longoria are also all waiting there for their opportunity. At AA, the brightest lights are a pair of 2B, 18 year old Clete Boyer and 24 year old Tony Taylor.

Season Preview: Detroit Wolverines

It’s hard to see the Wolverines making a lot of noise. The pitching staff-at least after Hal Newhouser–is pretty nondescript, and right now the offense is dependent on the Bailey Boys–Ed and Bob, that is. Still, if Jimmy Collins and Hank Greenberg can perform at their peak potential, and if Ty Cobb does anything at all, maybe there is something here.

Mark Dewey was set down, which juggled the bullpen quite a bit, and allowed John Hiller–despite only 2 IP on the Spring–to make the opening day roster … it’s unclear if Si Johnson will be healthy in time for his first start; if not look for Justin Verlander or Johnny Marcum to get the ball … despite a horrid Spring slump, the Wolverines maintain faith in Ty Cobb, although the 20 year old has slid down the depth chart. Still, he is retained on the roster over Jody Gerut … Hank Greenberg finally showed signs of recovery this Spring, retaining the starting role at 1B … while the Wolverines don’t have any true platoons, Tony Phillips will move between 2B and LF, allowing Robby Thompson and Geoff Jenkins to play.

37 year old 2B/LF Tony Phillips came out of nowhere to earn a starting spot. Two 20 year olds made the roster in rotation ace Hal Newhouser and OF Ty Cobb.

1B Nate Colbert and P Clyde Passeau are most likely to help from AAA. There’s not a lot at AA: perhaps 2 of the young SS, 20 year old Donie Bush or 18 year old Alfredo Griffin will turn into something.

Season Preview: Houston Colt 45’s

Houston is a dark horse to do something this year with a starting rotation that looks solid led by Roy Oswalt and an offense that is good top to bottom, anchored by the talents of Tony Gwynn, George Brett, and the intriguing potential of HR Johnson.

The final rotation spot goes to Bret Saberhagen … Most of the other cuts were obvious due to poor Spring performances: Andres Galarraga and Luis Gonzalez were especially disappointing … several players rebounded over the 2nd half of the Spring: Larry Hisle was red hot after a short stint in minor league camp, and Jeff Bagwell began to hit with some power … all of that made the final cut very hard, coming down, effectively, to DJ LeMahieu and Craig Biggio. Biggio stays due to his ability to fill in at some other positions, despite LeMahieu being older (27 to 25) and looking better at bat … Biggio’s ability to catch may come in handy early as Jim O’Rourke works his way back from injury.

34 year old C Jorge Posada is the oldest player on the opening day roster, which sports 2 teenagers in the starting rotation: 18 year old Ice Box Chamberlain and 19 year old Bret Saberhagen.

Speaking of teenagers .. 17 year old OF Pete Hill and 18 year old P Leon Day are developing at AAA (although Stubby Overmire–at the ripe old age of 23–may be of more immediate help). Things are a bit leaner at AA, but a trio of OFers, all 24 years old, may help down the road: Shin-Soo Choo, Al Cowens, and Hack Wilson.
