TWIWBL 71.9: The Year II Futures Game

{ As always, the game does a really piss-poor job of picking the rosters, this time leaving the World Future Stars without anyone rated at C. }

The starting pitchers were selected as much from who was rested as anything else, with Nip Winters (AAA, HOM) starting for the USA and Mélido Pérez (A, PHI) for the International side.

Winters struggled immediately, with Asdrúbal Cabrera (AAA, BAL) and Melky Cabrera (A, BBB) starting the game with a double and a single, putting runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs. Jorge Orta (AAA, CAG) drove in one, and Xander Bogaerts (AA, LAA) 2 with a double, giving the World Team and early 3-0 lead.

Pérez pitched 2 scoreless, but José Lima (A, MCG) struggled in the 3rd, giving up an RBI double to Ed Delahanty (A, BRK), who came around to score on a passed ball (Bert Campaneris (AAA, MCG) started at C for the World Team, followed by Heliodoro Hidalgo (A, KCM)–they seemed to make the most sense).

That made it 3-2, but Campaneris–clearly trying to make up for his struggles as a backstop,–took Ed Seward (A, MCG) deep in the 4th, putting the World up, 4-2. Bobby Abreu (AAA, PHI) did the same to Al Orth (AA, OTT) in the 5th, and the lead was 5-2, with the World side seeming to be cruising.

But all-star games are odd, right? There’s no continuity on the mound, and a few bad pitches can change everything. Enter Tom Harrison (A, HOD) for the World Team. One run scored on a wild pitch and Dave Malarcher (AA, HOD) drove in another, and Harrison gave way to Luis Tiant, Sr (A, MCG). Tiant gave up back-to-back homeruns, the first a 3-run job by Ralph Kiner (A, HOM), followed by a solo shot from Joe Torre (AAA, BBB).

And the game flipped, with the USA now on top, 8-5.

And that was it. Bill Harper (AA, HOU) pitched 2 excellent innings, and Billy Muffett (AAA, CLE) worked out of a little trouble in the 9th, and the USA walked away with the win.

Led by Abreu and Bogaerts, who had 3 each, the World outhit the USA 13-7. But Kiner’s shot proved too much to overcome, and he walked away with the Game MVP honors.

Another month, another quick trip through the minor leagues!

Featured Team: Austin Black Senators

The Black Senators have the best record in AA, playing at a .650 clip and leading their division by 5 games.

Their offense is thoroughly mediocre, but their pitching is something else, led by Kyle Kendrick (6-2, 3.84) and Bill Harper, who is 4-2 with 13 saves and a 1.07 ERA out of the bullpen. Nineteen year-old Vida Blue has shown flashes of great potential, averaging almost 11 K’s per 9 innings, but is currently injured.

Offensively … well it’s hard to find who the real leaders are, but it’s probably IF Russ Adams (311/404/444) and OF Derek Bell (315/344/489). Dick Williams leads the team with 9 HRs and 30 RBIs. Part of the issue is who’s no longer here: Travis Jackson, Pete Hill, and Von Joshua, each of whom have been stellar offensively, are at AAA, the majors, and on the injured list respectively. Mid-season acquisition Harry Stovey (part of Houston’s trade for Roger Clemens) looks to add something as well: overall, he’s slashing 374/447/835, although he’s a little off that in his first 10 games with Austin.

#AA Leaders

John Briggs, perhaps the most dominant player at AA has been recalled to Brooklyn. Briggs was slashing 315/437/518 with a dozen homeruns and over 50 Rs and RBIs. Behind Briggs, the best batters at AA are probably Adam Dunn (Nashville / Indianapolis ABC’s) and Jimmie Foxx (Sacramento / San Francisco Sea Lions). They are 1st and 2nd in SLG and OPS, and Dunn is 2nd in the league in homeruns with 21, while Foxx has 20. Vancouver’s Frankie Hayes (Portland Sea Dogs) leads AA with 23 HRs and Prince Fielder is tied with Dunn (Atlantic City / Philadelphia) with 21. Fort Wayne’s Billy Nash (Detroit Wolverines), Rochester’s Ken Keltner (Cleveland Spiders), and Tulsa’s Willie Crawford (Memphis) join Dunn and Foxx as the only AA batters with an OPS over 1.000.

Two teenagers from Albuquerque (Wandering House of David), 15 year-old Joe Nuxhall and 17 year-old Larry Dierker, continue to dominate on the mound. Nuxhall is first in ERA (2.59), Dierker leads in wins with 11, and the 2 are first and second in strikeouts. Vern Law (Syracuse / Homestead Grays) and Jeremy Sowers (Fort Wayne) have 10 wins each, and are 2nd and 3rd in ERA behind Nuxhall (Dierker is 6th).

AA can be a little odd: Heathcliff Slocumb (Montgomery / Birmingham Black Barons) leads with 19 saves, but 18 of those were with Hudson Valley (New York Black Yankees). Slocumb was part of the Tom Herr trade, taking over from Steve Bedrosian for Montréal, who had 17 saves before being called up to the WBL. Albuquerque’s Karl Spooner (2.08 ERA, 0.65 WHIP), Havana’s Glenn Spencer (Miami Cuban Giants; 2.92 ERA, 0.89 WHIP), and Madison’s Víctor Cruz (Chicago American Giants; 2.42 ERA, 0.92 WHIP) are among the other strongest relievers.

#AA Awards

Dierker won the AA Pitcher of the Month Award, going 4-0 with a 2.83 ERA, striking out 45 while walking only 4. Jorge Orta of Nashville was the AA Batter of the Month, hitting .330 with 7 homeruns in June.

Another month, another quick trip through the minor leagues!

Featured Team: New Orleans Pelicans

The AAA affiliate of the Memphis Red Sox has the second best record in AAA, leading their division by 6 games. They’ve managed to keep their lead despite a fairly constant amount of churn as players move up and down with the parent club.

The Pelicans lead with their offense, with the near-constant presence of veteran Joe Cronin at 1B, 2B Dustin Pedroia, and OF Joe Kelley. Bob Brenly, Eddie Rosario, and Wayne Causey have all been strong contributors who, like Pedroia, spent a fair bit of time in Memphis.

Cronin leads the team in homeruns with 13, followed by Brenly with 11. Brenly has the most impressive slash line of the regulars, with his 299/342/664 giving him an OPS just over 1.000.

Joe Kelly (the other one–note only a single e in the last name) leads the way on the mound with a 6-3 record and a 3.36 ERA. Andrew Miller is 5-0 since his promotion from AA with an ERA of 3.03. The bullpen is anchored by Luiz Gohara, who has 14 saves and an ERA under 3. Gohara and Kelly each started the year in Memphis.

#AAA Leaders

If you are a devotee of OPS, the best batters in AAA have been Baby Doll Jacobson (Washington / Baltimore Black Sox; 1.114); Jung Ho Kang (Columbus / Wandering House of David; 1.042), and Joey Votto (Cincinnati / Indianapolis ABC’s; 1.000). Jacobson and Votto are both with their WBL clubs now. Those 3 are closely trailed by Merv Rettenmund (Washington; .996) and Al Kaline (Toronto / Detroit Wolverines; .984).

Kaline is 3rd in AAA in BA and OBP, and 2nd in hits while Rettumund is tied for the lead with 21 homeruns, and leads in RBIs and Rs. Aaron Judge (Norfolk / Philadelphia Stars), Jacobson, Benny Kauff (Hartford / New York Gothams), and Kevin Young (Louisville / Homestead) each have 21 HRs as well.

Finally, along with Kaline (3.3) and Rettenmund (3.1), Max Carey (Louisville) and Cliff Lee (Seattle / Portland) are the other AAA players with a WAR over 3.

Cincinnati’s Virgil Trucks has been, by far, the dominant starting pitcher, leading the league with a 2.05 ERA and a 10-3 record. Trucks also leads the league with 8 complete games and a 0.94 WHIP, and is second in the league with 167 strikeouts. Bob Gibson (St. Louis / Kansas City) trails Trucks with a 2.36 ERA and 9 victories and two other starters, AJ Burnett (Newark / New York Black Yankees) and St. Louis’ Jock Menefee also have ERA’s under 3.00. Burnett’s teammate, Lefty Gomez, leads AAA with 181 strikeouts in 115 innings.

San Jose’s Billy Taylor (San Francisco Sea Lions) and St. Louis’ Adam Russell lead AAA in saves with 21 and 20, respectively.

#AAA Awards

Rube Melton (Atlanta / Birmingham Black Barons) was the AAA Pitcher of the Month, going 4-0 with a 2.58 ERA, striking out 53 in under 40 innings; while Cincinnati’s Doc Hobitzell was the AAA Player of the Month, hitting .426 with 11 home runs in June.

AAA Players of the Week: Hobitzell twice, along with Steve Garvey (Montréal / Ottawa Mounties [since traded to the Los Angeles Angels]) and Cincinnati’s Jhonny Peralta.

TWIWBL 19.11: AAA Roundup

{ It’s the first of June, so it’s time to look at the WBL Minor Leagues. Throughout, we identify both the AAA team and their WBL franchise. }

#Featured Team: The New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans, AA affiliate of the Memphis Red Sox, lead their division by 4 games with a 34-20 record.

They are, simply, the best offensive team in AAA. And, as you may guess from that line, they struggle a bit on the mound. But the real challenge for the Pelicans is coping with the talent they’ve lost to Memphis.

Billy Bryan, Wayne Causey, and Fred Lynn had combined for 32 homeruns for the Pelicans, and they’ve all moved on to the Red Sox, along with infielder Iván De Jesus. The players coming back the other way–Nomar Garciaparra, Bob Brenly, and Dustin Pedroia–have done very little to help (although Brenly has shown surprising power). And Larry Hisle, signed after he was let go by Houston, has struggled as well.

But the Pelicans keep scoring runs, with a lineup anchored by OFs David Justice (295/370/625) and Tony Conigliaro (286/331/563) and IF Francisco Lindor (299/352/528). Add in Dwight Evans‘ 12 homeruns and 30 RBIs and the Pelicans still have a fair bit of firepower.

The pitching is … confusing. Norwood Gibson and Ellis Kinder are each 5-2, with ERAs over 6.00. Eddie Cicotte, sent down from Memphis a few weeks ago, has won all 4 of his starts. And their best starter has probably been Joe Kelly, who has a 3.23 ERA, but only a 3-3 record.

Luiz Gohara and Derek Lowe have been solid at the end of games, but it’s pretty clear that unless they get some better performances from Gibson and Kinder (and Jeff Locke, who also has a winning record with an ERA over 6.00), the Pelicans fortunes could change dramatically.

#Checking In On …

The Atlanta X-Giants were the subject of last month’s update. They still have the best record in the league, although like New Orleans, they have clearly lost their best players to promotions to Birmingham.

But in their case, Greg Maddux and Warren Spahn have pitched well since their demotion, joining Kent Mercker and Jim Whitney in a very strong rotation.

We mentioned Joe Rudi last time, and the 22 year-old has impressed in his first taste of AAA, slashing 281/323/537.

AAA Leaders

Of the players profiled last time, only Joey Votto (Cincinnati/Indianapolis) remains at AAA, with Hi Myers (Brooklyn), Gary Sheffield (Miami), Fred Lynn (Memphis), and Robinson Canó (Kansas City) all now holding down a roster spot in the show.

In addition to Votto, who continues to produce, hitting at a 324/459/580 clip, the dominant players at AAA are

Baby Doll Jacobson. Leading AAA with 19 homeruns, Jacobson is slashing 343/389/725 for Washington (Baltimore) and pulling off his best Babe Ruth imitation on the leaderboards. Even with the best record in the league and Paul Blair hitting better in Baltimore, it’s not clear how long the Black Sox can keep Jacobson at AAA.
Louisville (Homestead)’s OF pair of Paul Waner (306/401/591) and Max Carey (357/441/473) are probably the best hitting tandem in the league.
Virgil Trucks has done nothing but impress since his demotion, sitting with a 6-1 record and a 1.59 ERA since being sent to Cincinnati after struggling in Indianapolis in the early going.
San Jose (San Francisco)’s Nick Altrock leads the league in wins at 7-2 with a 2.22 ERA.
In the bullpen, St. Louis (Kansas City)’s Adam Russell (16 saves, 1.71 ERA) and Queens (Brooklyn)’s Darren Dreifort (15 saves, 1.40 ERA) lead the way.

TWIWBL 19.1: AA Roundup

{ Whoops. This never got published, despite being about 3 weeks ago, in terms of game-time.

It’s the first of June, so it’s time to look at the minor leagues; throughout, we identify both the AAA team and their WBL franchise. }

Featured Team: Albuquerque Isotopes

When writing the April summary, Albuquerque’s teenage pitchers caught my eye, so they’re the focus this time around. This is a bit of a departure, as the Isotopes have a mediocre 28-25 record, 5 games behind in the AA-West. This represents a fairly strong degree of underperformance, as (other than homeruns), Albuquerque is one of the top offenses in the league.

Two of their better performers–OF Cy Williams and IF Bunny Downs–have been promoted to AAA. That hurts, as Williams led the team with 11 homeruns and 35 RBIs and Downs’ 360/436/472 was a key cog in their offensive engine.

OF Danny Green‘s 11 homeruns and 34 RBIs pace the Isotopes currently, and a trio of infielders–Bert Campaneris (333/379/580), Frank Grant (312/408/453), and Luis Aparicio (339/394/402)–have kept the offense going. But it’s a team that really could use some pop: after Green, Campaneris has 5 homeruns and Cap Anson has 4, and that’s it.

Which brings us to the real interesting part. Albuquerque’s pitching staff is led by a trio of teenagers. 17 year-old Larry Dierker has been the best of them at 7-4 with a 3.93 ERA and Joe Nuxhall, at a tender 15 years of age, is 5-1 with a fantastic 2.18 ERA. They’re joined by 19 year old Jack Jenkins, who has chipped in with a 3-0 record.

Jeff Heathcock–at the venerable age of 23–anchors the bullpen with 11 saves and Tom Harrison (20 years old) has been almost unhittable as his setup man.

#Checking In On …

We left the Madison Black Wolf struggling at 6-20, having lost 15 consecutive games. They’ve stabilized slightly, sitting going 10-17 since that point. They’re still in last place, but it’s certainly an improvement. Scott Radinsky is all the way up to 7 saves.

#AA Leaders

In terms of record, Vern Law (9-0; Syracuse/Homestead), Al Spalding (8-1; Troy/New York Gothams), and John Anderson (7-0; Montgomery/Birmingham) lead the way. Sean O’Sullivan (Las Vegas/Los Angeles) leads the league with a 1.80 ERA, followed by phenom Joe Nuxhall (Albuquerque/House of David) at 2.18.

Steve Bedrosian (Montgomery)’s 17 saves have already gotten him promoted to the big leagues, leaving Heathcliff Slocumb (Hudson Valley/New York Black Yankees) the league leader with 13. (Mychal Givens also has 13, but Homestead has already moved him to AAA.) Montgomery’s Rick Camp (3-1, 2 saves, 5 holds, 0.90 WHIP) and Hudson Valley’s Joba Chamberlain (1-2, 5 holds, 1.08 WHIP) deserve a mention as well.

Offensively, John Briggs (Jersey City/Brooklyn) and Jimmie Foxx (Sacramento/San Francisco) have dominated the league. Briggs is hitting 333/455/559 with 37 RBIs and Foxx has 19 homeruns and a .705 slugging. Willie Crawford of Tulsa/Memphis leads the league with a .367 average and a .466 OBP. Oklahoma City/Kansas City’s Kolten Wong leads AA with 45 RBIs.

TWIWBL 14.0: May 17th Indy League Update – High Indy

{ On the 17th of each month, we’ll take a look at the Independent Leagues, a three-tier system with promotion and relegation. Transactions are allowed between the Independent Leagues and the WBL teams. }

The Low and Mid Indy Leagues have barely started their seasons, but the High Indy League is about 40 games in. The High Indy is a 16 team league, where the bottom 4 teams are relegated each year.

The standings are a remarkable mess, with a very clear cause: the Durham Bulls are 2-38 on the season.

Two wins. And thirty-eight losses.

That allows four teams to have either 26 or 27 wins, with the Tampa Bay Tarpons, at 27-13, the best of the lot.

Durham has struggled through with a highly compromised pitching staff, including two hurlers–Dustin Hermanson and Euel Moore–who have been thrown out almost every day, and allowed to rack up ERA’s over 25. Hermanson is 1-12, Moore 0-9. Clearly, the league needs to intervene with the management here.

The team has had some decent offensive performers, especially in the OF from Mike A. Marshall and Whitey Witt, but also from the two-way wonder that is Kevin Seitzer. Seitzer is slashing 294/328/514 as a 3B, and is also 0-1 with a save (remember, they have 2 wins all year) as the Bulls’ closer.

Durham’s woes may be addressed, as the WBL’s New York Gothams have sent them five players–four pitchers and SS Davy Force–in exchange for young Freddie Fitzsimmons. As part of the resulting roster juggling, the Gotham’s waived Ken Boyer.

#Top Performers

Curt Motton of the Minneapolis Millers has been far and away the best player in the High Indy League, slashing along at 379/485/793 with 16 homeruns. Featured Team: Madison Black Wolf (Chicago)

Chicago‘s AA affiliate in Madison started the year fine, with a 6-5 record after 11 games. Since then, they’ve lost fifteen consecutive games. They are certainly not that bad of a team, as 7 of the defeats have been by a single run. But still, 6-20–and 12 games back after a month–is not good.

No pitcher has more than a single win, with Harry “Green River” Buckner having probably been the best of them, despite a 1-4, 5.63 ERA showing so far. Ted Lyons (1-3, 5.52) and Sean Gallagher (0-3, 5.89) have pitched better than their records as well. Closer Scott Radinsky does have 2 saves and a 1.69 ERA but, as you may expect, has not had many opportunities.

The best offensive performer for the Black Wolf was OF Magglio Ordonez (320/397/660), but he was promoted to AAA Milwaukee. That leaves 20-year old SS/OF Jack Doyle (280/342/500) at the heart of Madison’s lineup. OF Henry Cotto has 7 HRs and 20 RBIs and is slashing 245/286/481. And there’s not a lot else.

Lyons, Gallagher, and Doyle are all under 22, and are currently the brightest prospects on the Black Wolf.

Top AA Performers

Jimmie Foxx (Sacramento/San Francisco) and Joe Rudi (Montgomery/Birmingham) have been the dominant offensive forces at AA, with both recently promoted to AAA. Foxx slashed 358/456/821 with 9 HRs at Sacramento and Rudi 359/400/859 for Montgomery. Atlantic City (Philadelphia)’s Prince Fielder leads AA with 13 HRs, and Fort Worth (Detroit)’s Bill Sweeney is hitting .400. More impressively, Oklahoma City (Kansas City)’s Johnny Bassler is keeping his OBP just shy of .500 at .495.

Of those, none are over the age of 22, and Bassler is only 17, so all should be considered prospects.

On the mound, three starters still have sub-2.00 ERAs: Sacramento (San Francisco)’s Turk Wendell at 2-0, 1.19; Charlotte (Baltimore)’s Dave Smith at 2-0, 1.64; and San Diego (Los Angeles)’s Sean O’Sullivan at 2-0, 1.71. Wendell also has a stellar 0.79 WHIP.

Syracuse (Homestead)’s Vern Law is 5-0 with a 2.97 ERA, but his future may be at 1B and not on the mound–clearly, though, if he keeps this up, he’ll progress as a hurler. Steve Bedrosian (Montgomery/Birmingham) and Mark Williamson (Charlotte/Baltimore) lead AA with 9 saves each.

Featured Team: The Atlanta X-Giants

The Atlanta X-Giants (Birmingham) are off to a spectacular start, with a 22-3 record, best in AAA by 8 games in the young season. They opened the season with a 4 game sweep of Washington, “struggled” to a 5-3 record, and have since then reeled off 13 straight victories, including series sweeps of Milwaukee, Seattle, Orlando, and Louisville. That puts them 8 games ahead of second-place Hartford after only a month of play.

Larry Benton (4-0, 1.44 ERA) and Tim Hudson (3-0, 2.78 ERA with a WHIP of 0.84) have already been called up to Birmingham. John Malarkey is the current ace of the X-Giants’ staff, at 4-1, 2.85. Peter Moylan has been hit hard, but has still managed a half-dozen saves despite an ERA over 6.

Offensively, Birmingham has already raided Atlanta’s outfield for Bob Nieman (293/379/569) and Curtis Granderson (340/358/660), leaving their best hitters as 1B Jake Beckley (299/398/536) and 3B Pie Traynor (351/361/468). SS Herman Long (381/395/762) has been on an extreme hot streak, but has started only 9 games so far. Beckley and C Del Crandall (206/247/485) lead the X-Giants with 19 RBIs each.

Given how Birmingham is struggling across the board, any of these players could find themselves in the WBL soon. But the best actual prospect may be OF Joe Rudi, who at 22 was just promoted to AAA.

AAA Leaders

Robinson Cano (423/461/634) has already been called up to the WBL. There are four other batters whose performance is crying out for a chance with their big league clubs:

Quebec’s Hi Myers is leading AAA with a .452 average, slashing 452/462/808. Given the struggles of Ottawa’s OF, Myers should be given a chance soon.
New Orleans’ Freddy Lynn is slashing 415/465/908, and while Memphis’ OF looks full at the moment, at some point that level of production is impossible to ignore.
Joey Votto, playing for Indianapolis’ AAA affiliate in Cincinnati, is slashing 370/500/630, and likely to to be the next player called up to the ABC’s.
Finally, Orlando’s Gary Sheffield is pounding along at a 357/449/655 clip, and may find himself in Miami sooner than later.

In addition to the Atlanta pitchers mentioned above, San Jose’s Carlos Carrasco was pounded with San Francisco, but has been almost unhittable at AAA, posting a 1.90 ERA. Cincinnati’s Doc White has been stellar over 3 starts, allowing a WHIP of only 0.85, just slightly behind Hudson.

From the bullpen, the most dominant performer has been Quebec’s Darren Dreifort, who has gotten a decision in each of his 12 appearances, sitting at 2-1 with 9 saves. Non-prospect, 39 year-old, Doug Jones is 1-0 with 2 saves and 4 holds, and has yet to give up an earned run.
