TWIWBL 56.19: Spring Training Notes – Houston Colt 45’s

Spring Training Questions

Exactly how the roster shapes up, from C to MI to the reserve spots, all have to be answered.

Injuries

George Brett will miss the first few weeks of the season with a knee injury.

First Cuts

Of the starters, only Leon Day has struggled, but the teenager holds onto his position for now on the strength of his work last season. But some clarity has emerged among the relievers, where Óscar Tuero, Scott Bankhead, and Roberto Osuna were all sent down.

That leaves 22 pitchers in camp, so there will be more movement here over the next week.

Cs Bob Boone and Cy Perkins were sent down, along with Felipe Alou and, in Paul Goldschmidt, Aramis Ramírez, and Carney Lansford, three players who continue to show incredible promise at the plate until an actual game starts, when they can no longer make any contact.

3B remains a bit up in the air, as nobody has really hit–teen phenom Edgar Martínez has shown excellent plate discipline, but has yet to get a hit and Russ Adams has probably been the best of the group, with an OPS of .500.But, in all likelihood, the Colt 45’s are really just looking for someone to backup George Brett occasionally.

Bama Rowell‘s strong start at 2B keeps that position a bit crowded, while Shawon Dunstan heads to the minors, clearing a little room at SS.

In the OF, César Cedeño and Derek Bell have impressed, while Ken Henderson, Kirby Puckett, Shin-Soo Choo, and Hunter Pence have all been returned to minor league camp.

Which leaves the frustrating case of Jim O’Rourke, who refuses to show any potential at the plate, but has so much defensive flexibility that he retains a spot in camp. For the time being.

Second Cuts

Chad Qualls has imploded, giving up 12 hits in just over 2 innings of work, and earning a ticket to the minors along with Bill Harper, Harry Staley, and Wade Davis.

Jim O’Rourke and Rick Cerone were also sent down.

Of the 2B/SS/3B in camp, only Bama Rowell and Craig Biggio are hitting over .200, with only Edgar Martínez‘ eye for the strike zone joining them in having an OPS over .500. Someone has to catch fire here, but until then, they all remain.

The OFers also remain, as the worst performers–Jim Wynn and Casey Stengel–did enough last season to be virtually guaranteed roster spots.

Third Cuts

The bullpen is coming into focus, ending Chris Saenz‘ time in camp. Dock Ellis sticks around, but only as a hedge against Vida Blue‘s injury diagnosis, which should be forthcoming shortly.

Young draftee Edgar Martínez was sent to the minors, leaving only 2 players capable of playing 3B in camp in Russ Adams and the presumed starter until George Brett returns from injury, Grant Johnson.

The battle between Jason Castro and Will Smith to backup Jorge Posada at C is fierce, and Kevin Young, Bama Rowell, and César Cedeño are all making strong arguments for roster spots.

Final Cuts

SS Travis Jackson heads to AAA, along with MI partner, 2B Bama Rowell.

Leon Day will start the year at AAA as the teenager seeks a little more consistency before assuming a fulltime WBL spot.

Harry Stovey impressed in a brief showing last season, but is both blocked positionally and was unable to get anything going this Spring, leading to his starting the year at AAA.

Houston still has a ton of open questions, from the final 2-3 pitchers to be sent down to the backup C slot. But they got to 30 by demoting two OFers, Derek Bell and Gorman Thomas.

RP Andrew Chafin was placed on the DL.

The Colt 45’s rotation was always set in Roy Oswalt, Stephen Strasburg, Toad Ramsey, Roger Clemens, and Bret Saberhagen, so even Oswalt and Strasburg’s rough Springs haven’t changed that. The question, then, is which of the arms that remain would benefit more from regular starts at AAA and which could contribute from the WBL bullpen. Ice Box Chamberlain–who, it has to be remembered, is only 19–was moved out of camp.

Will Smith turned a number of heads all Spring, but the Colt 45’s believe regular playing time at AAA would serve him better than backing up Jorge Posada; a task that will fall to Jason Castro to open the season. This logic is clearly not absolute, though, as 18 year old César Cedeño will start the season on the Colt 45’s bench (assumedly only until George Brett recovers), making Kevin Young the final cut from camp.

Here are the call ups as rosters expanded from 24 to 32 for all teams.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Bob Miller was activated from the DL, and P’s Lindy McDaniel, Rafael Betancourt, and Milt Pappas; OF Chick Stahl; and IF Miller Huggins and Cal Ripken were all recalled.

#Birmingham Black Barons

OF Billy Southworth was recalled from a rehab assignment. With Birmingham’s AAA team in the playoffs, the Black Barons reached down to AA for P Eric Gunderson.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

OFs John Briggs and Art Griggs were activated from the DL. With Queens still in the AAA playoff chase, other recalls will wait a few days.

#Chicago American Giants

Ps Nate Jones, Fernando Rodney, and Frank Smith; OF Magglio Ordóñez and Rocky Colavito; IF Luke Appling and Damian Jackson.

#Cleveland Spiders

IF Bill Dahlen was activated from the DL; Ps Tyler Walker, Stan Bahnsen, and Bob Feller; IF Hal Trosky and Evan Longoria; OF Larry Doby.

#Detroit Wolverines

Ps Jason Schmidt, Roberto Hernández, and Whitey Wilshere; IF Robby Thompson and Cecil Fielder; OF Ron LeFlore and Jody Gerut.

#Homestead Grays

P Earl Hamilton was activated from the DL; Ps Babe Adams, Frank Linzy, and Mychal Givens; IF Kevin Young and Chris Sabo; OF Max Carey.

P Frank Castillo was recalled from a rehab assignment; with St. Louis still in the hunt at AAA, P Evan Meek and IF Gene Freese were recalled from AA.

#Los Angeles Angels

P Brett Anderson was activated from the DL. Ps Jeurys Familia and Chuck Finley; IF Tim Wallach; OF Hi Myers.

#Memphis Red Sox

P Lance Broadway from AA with more to come after AAA New Orleans finishes their season.

#Miami Cuban Giants

IF Martín Dihigo was activated from a rehab assignment; Ps Steve Brown and Dontrelle Willis; C Smoky Burgess; IF Bert Campaneris; OF Yasiel Puig and Sandy Amorós.

The Black Sox continue to have to retool their pitching, as Bob Miller will be out for about 5 weeks with hard-throwing John Wetteland joining the big league club.

Hunter Pence was returned to AAA San Antonio with Casey Stengel‘s return from the DL.

#Ottawa Mounties

Chris Leroux was sent to AAA with Clark Griffith being recalled to make an emergency start for Ottawa.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Ned Garvin continues to be essentially unhittable, allowing 1 unearned run in over 6 innings of work, increasing his record to 8-3 on a 4-1 win over Brooklyn. Manny Machado had 3 hits and Don Bessent picked up his 14th save.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Casey Stengel heads to the DL after spraining his elbow diving for a ball in the series opener against Chicago. Hunter Pence was recalled from AAA San Antonio to take his place on the roster.

It was worse news for Bret Saberhagen, as a partially torn labrum will end the RHPs season. Dock Ellis will return to Houston, attempting to improve on his rough showing earlier in the season.

Andrés Galarraga delivered the first 3 hits of his WBL career including a 3-run homerun to help the Colt 45’s to an 11-5 win in game 3 of their series against Chicago. HR Johnson, George Brett, and Pete Hill also chipped in 3 hits and Stephen Strasburg tossed 6 strong innings to improve his record to 6-5.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Willie McGee and Boog Powell combined for 6 hits, 6 runs, and 7 RBIs in a 16-7 win for the Monarchs over Philadelphia. The win went to Andy Pettitte, who moved to 6-4 with 6 strong innings.

#Ottawa Mounties

Gary Peters will miss about 2 weeks, prompting the Mounties to recall P Clark Griffith from Ottawa while Peters heads to the DL.

There is some cause for hope on the year-long project that is Randy Johnson. The Big Unit put in his best performance of the year with 5 shutout innings against the Black Yankees. Unfortunately, the Mounties’ bullpen couldn’t hold an early 1-0 lead, and Ottawa dropped the game, 5-3.

TWIWBL 24.7: Mid-Season Reviews: Houston Colt 45’s

Summary

Very little has gelled in Houston–there is enough talent here to compete, but at this point, a .500 record would be the goal.

What’s Gone Right

The Toy Cannon. Jim Wynn has been a fantastic player, sparking Houston’s offense with an OPS over .800.

Wagner over Lidge. Billy Wagner has been lights-out since taking over the closer role from Brad Lidge, who has been, well, less awful, since the move as well.

Solid Starters. Roy Oswalt, Toad Ramsey, and Bret Saberhagen have all pitched well.

What’s Gone Wrong

No Pop. Wynn leads the team in homeruns, with 9. That’s a bit of a disappointment, to say the least. Jim O’Rourke, George Brett, Carlos Correa, Lance Berkman, Jorge Posada, and Craig Biggio all have SLG under .400, with Berkman–who has an OPS under .700–the biggest disappointment of the group.

The Dock is Out. Despite being given every opportunity, Dock Ellis was sent to AAA after really struggling out of the bullpen.

Roster Flex. The Colt 45’s were supposed to be able to take advantage of a very flexible roster structure, especially with Wynn, Biggio, HR Johnson, and O’Rourke being able to split time between CF, C, SS, 3B, and 2B. They’ve all played, and all played decently, but it hasn’t turned into a significant tactical advantage.

Key Storylines

Can the offense be tweaked so it starts to produce up to its potential?

There are some individual questions worth watching as well: can HR Johnson take the next step towards becoming an elite WBL IF? Can someone actually take hold of the 3B job? For Johnson, Biggio, Wynn, and O’Rourke, there are questions about their ultimate defensive position as well.

Trading Outlook

HOLDING???

It may be a mix for Houston. They really need some power.

AAA Shuttle

It’s been a bit rough. Felipe Alou was good, but has struggled mightily since then. None of the players sent down–especially Paul Goldschmidt, Gorman Thomas, Ice Box Chamberlain, and Scott Erickson–have done enough at AAA to make the team question their demotions.

Midseason Changes

Either Hunter Pence or Gorman Thomas are likely to be called up to try to help with the OF power.
