TWIWBL 7.3: Series VI Notes – Effa Manley Division

{With the day off on April 25th, it was a time of roster moves and lineup and pitching adjustments. As such, there are a few more notes for each team than usual.}

#Cleveland Spiders

A back injury has landed Napoleon Lajoie on the disable list, with the 22-year old expected to miss about two weeks. OF Kenny Lofton was recalled from AAA.

OF Johnny Bates tied the WBL record with 5 hits, going 5-for-6 with 3 runs scored as the Spiders blew out the Wandering House of David 11-2 behind a strong performance from SP Bill Steen.

Despite making his big league debut with 4.2 scoreless innings, Wilbur Cooper was sent back to AAA when Mel Harder was activated from the DL.

The above really dictated the roster moves for the Spiders, but the lineup has seen some real changes. Look for Lofton, Rowland Office, and Sammy Strang to see significantly more playing time as the next set of games unfold.

#Homestead Grays

Ps Frank Linzy and Daniel Hudson have been absolutely hammered, and both will move to AAA, with Carlos Zambrano staying in the big leagues, but being moved out of the starting rotation, to be replaced by Hal Carlson. Despite an 0-4 record and an ERA over 8, Corey Kluber stays in the rotation for now.

Jim Hegan went 0-for-11 in his big league debut, making the choice of what to do when Peaches Graham returned from the DL pretty easy: Hegan heads back to AAA Louisville.

Pedro Feliz‘ 130/141/195 nightmare is over, as the 3B was demoted with Chris Sabo being added to the big league roster. Sabo has pressure behind him, especially at AA, where both Andy Van Slyke and Freddie Lindstrom are performing very well at the hot corner.

#Indianapolis ABC’s

Bronson Arroyo‘s refusal to accept a AAA assignment places him in a precarious position if his performances don’t improve, but for now he remains in the bullpen. Both Doc White and Tony Mullane are pitching well for Cincinnati, but remain at AAA for now.

The roster is challenging right now: when Joe Morgan returns (which is a subject of great mystery right now), Lonny Frey will head to AAA, but he’s needed right now. Pete Rose‘s slow start makes him expendable, and he’ll try to get back on track in the minors, freeing up a roster spot for RP Rob Murphy‘s return from the DL tomorrow.

#New York Black Yankees

Babe Ruth was on base 4 times and still saw his 23-game hitting streak end: 4 walks and a strikeout will do that. Still, streak sets the WBL standard on the young season.

New York has the luxury of carrying Willie Randolph, despite his 186/311/256 start, but look for Craig Counsell to see a bit more time at 2B.

#Philadelphia Stars

While the results of Jack Meyer‘s injury may change this, right now the Stars’ staff looks solid, although there is still some uncertainty as to who the final rotation member might be (John Montgomery Ward and Jaret Wright are the current candidates, with Jack Easton pitching well at AAA despite an 0-4 record there).

IF Al Smith (132/226/226) is headed to AAA, and Gene DeMontreville (135/135/162) should be joining him, but the lack of adequate middle infield depth keeps him with the Stars for the time being. Jose Ramirez will take Smith’s place on the big league roster.

Season Preview: Cleveland Spiders

Not a lot was expected of the Spiders heading into this season. And that was before 2 rotation starters and their starting C and CF were all injured. The bullpen looks strong, and there is some decent offensive talent, just not enough to convince. A lot hinges on whether Rowland Office can continue the level of performance that forced him onto the roster.

Final Roster

SP: Whit Wyatt, Cy Young, Bob Feller, Pat Malone, Mel Harder.
RP: Sam McDowell, Stan Coveleski & Hardie Henderson; Chuck Porter & Yordano Ventura; Cory Gearrin & Chad Qualls; Terry Adams.

C: Louis Santop; John Ellis; Andy Etchebarren.
1BJake Stahl; Nap Lajoie
2B: Chuck Knoblauch
3BKen Keltner; Bob Elliott
SSBill Dahlen; Bill Knickerbocker

DH: Ron Blomberg

Notes

Anticipated opening day starter Whit Wyatt headed to the DL with a herniated disk. He’ll be back within a couple weeks, but it throws what was a settled rotation into a bit of disorder … it does keep both Sudden Sam McDowell and Stan Coveleski on the roster for a while as well … The Spiders start the season with a full DL, with Doug Corbett, Phenomenal Smith, Bill Steen, Louis Santop, Sammy Strang, and Tris Speaker all out. Corbett, Steen, and Strang should all be back around the same time as Wyatt … Santop’s injury moves John Ellis into the starting C slot and keeps Andy Etchebarren on the roster for the time being … Rowland Office has gone from Spring roster filler to starting LF after a 385/418/673 Spring, challenging the Spiders to find playing time for both him and Johnny Bates … the final cut was a bit of a shock, as Kenny Lofton looked to slot right in as Speaker’s replacement. Instead, Cleveland has opted for an OF with Office, Bates, Larry Doby, and Ron Blomberg splitting time … the dearth of production at SS has Cleveland trying to engineer a deal for Ottawa’s Freddy Parent

35 year old P Stan Coveleski is the oldest player on the opening day roster, with 19 year old SP Bob Feller the youngest.

1B is quite deep for Cleveland, with Jim Thome and Hal Trosky waiting at AAA for a chance to contributed and 20 year old Charlie Grimm biding his time at AA.

This Week In Whirled Baseball: Spring Training Update I

Welcome to the very first installment of TWIWBL, 10 days into Spring Training. Each team’s individual Spring Training Preview page has been updated, and here are some highlights from around the league, focusing on injuries and performances that have shuffled depth charts.

#BALTIMORE BLACK SOX

When Bill Byrd went down, Mike Mussina was called up and his early performances have moved the 23 year old into the competition for the end of the rotation spots.

#BROOKLYN ROYAL GIANTS

Closer Watty Clark has been nearly unhittable with 3 saves in 3 chances in the Spring.

#CLEVELAND SPIDERS

CF Tris Speaker is out for several months with a torn calf muscle, throwing the Spiders OF into some chaos, and opening the door for both Larry Doby and Kenny Lofton to see more playing time.

#HOMESTEAD GRAYS

C Josh Gibson will miss most of Spring Training, but should be back for Opening Day. His absence, however, has revealed a paucity of talent at C, both at the WBL level and throughout the organization. Hobie Landrith and Blake Swihart will see some time during the Spring in support of Peaches Graham and the GM has begun scouring the land to help fill up the Grays’ roster of minor league backstops.

#INDIANAPOLIS ABC’S

Some of the best battles of the Spring are in the infield in Indianapolis, where Jake Stenzel and Johnny Bench are both hitting incredibly well at C, and there’s barely a hair’s width difference between Joe Morgan and Miller Huggins at 2B and Piggy Ward and Ed Charles at 3B.

#MEMPHIS RED SOX

With projected front of rotation SPs Sadie McMahon, Roger Clemens, and Nixey Callahan all posting ERA’s over 8, and Jon Lester‘s 7.00 ERA the best of other options, the starting rotation is a mess in Kansas City. Luckily, they’re only 10 games in.

#NEW YORK BLACK YANKEES

One thing is constant in the WBL: Babe Ruth leads the league in HR, with 5 in 9 games. He, Mickey Mantle, Eric Davis, and Aaron Judge may be the best 4 man OF in the league.

#NEW YORK GOTHAMS

The trio of Christy Mathewson, Gaylord Perry, and Mickey Welch are having a remarkable Spring, with 5 wins and only 5 ER in over 30 IP between them.

#SAN FRANCISCO SEA LIONS

The Sea Lions are committed to the running game, with Pete Browning and Rickey Henderson tied for the Spring league with 5.

Spring Training Preview: Cleveland

  • The starting rotation seems set, which means Hardie Henderson, Whit Wyatt, Stan Coveleski, and Bill Steen are battling for some long relief innings.
    • Injuries to Steen and Phenomenal Smith have opened some opportunities here, especially with Smith being out until sometime in June. Adding to the uncertainty, the projected top 3–Bob Feller, Pat Malone, and Mel Harder–have all struggled mightily. It feels like Cy Young and Wyatt will end up in the rotation, but its all up for grabs right now.
      • Wyatt, Young Feller, and Henderson are in, leaving 5 pitchers–Harder, Malone, Coveleski, Hank Gastright, and Sudden Sam McDowell–vying for the final slot.
  • Chad Qualls and Terry Adams are fighting for the closer role.
    • Cory Gearrin, Qualls, and Doug Corbett will setup Adams at the back end of the bullpen. Firpo Marberry has been recalled for some help in middle relief.
  • Louis Santop has an edge over John Ellis to start at C who has an edge over Andy Etchebarren to back him up.
    • Ellis’ Spring has him pushing for playing time, but he won’t displace Top behind the plate.
  • Jake Stahl and Hal Trosky are fighting to backup Jim Thome at 1B as are Bob Elliot and Sammy Strang at 3B behind Ken Keltner.
    • Not only has Strang played well, his ability to serve as a backup to Chuck Knoblauch at 2B probably assures him a roster spot.
      • 1B is very crowded, making Trosky’s Spring struggles enough to send him to AAA.
  • Bill Dahlen starts at SS, and Joe Sewell looks to be his backup, but Tom Veryzer could slip in if the Spiders decide a defensive option at SS is needed.
    • If Sewell continues to hit no better than Veryzer, the better glove will make the roster.
      • None of them have an OPS over .300. OPS. Someone had better hit soon. Bill Knickerbocker has been recalled to see if some more competition helps.
  • Either Harry Stovey or Kenny Lofton should make the team, but probably not both.
    • Tris Speaker is out for several months, opening the door for Lofton. Gus Bell, called up from AAA, will also get a look as a CF option.
    • The Spiders have also recalled OF Rowland Office and IF Jim Gantner to help with the Spring roster.
      • Office is making an argument to stay; Gantner is just sticking around for Spring flexibility.
