#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Beals Becker and Jackie Robinson each went deep twice, but the Royal Giants bullpen–usually a strength of the team–imploded in a see-saw affair as Brooklyn fell to Ottawa 13-11. The next day brought more of the same: John Briggs went deep twice and the Royal Giants hit 5 homeruns, but Ottawa won the game, 10-9 in another poor outing from Don Drysedale, who fell to 3-3.

#Homestead Grays

The Grays released the highly ineffective Del Crandall, recalling Rick Ferrell from AAA to serve as Josh Gibson‘s backup for a while.

Willie Stargell hit 2 out of the park, but the Grays’ bullpen couldn’t close the game out in a 10-9 loss to Ottawa.

#New York Gothams

Pinky Higgins hit 2 out as the Gothams topped Houston 6-4.

Christy Mathewson had one of the best outings of the year, twirling a 3 hit shutout while striking out 11 as the Gothams beat Houston, 3-0. Matty walked only 1 and needed only 99 pitches in improving his record to 3-5, backed by Willie Mays‘ 23rd homer of the year.

#Ottawa Mounties

Roberto Alomar hit 2 homeruns while going 4 for 4, scoring 4 times, and driving in 5 in a come-from-behind, wild 13-11 win over Brooklyn. Álex Rodríguez won the game with a 2 run walkoff shot in the bottom of the 9th and both Rodríguez and Gary Carter, who also went deep, had 3 hits each.

Alomar hit another 2 homeruns and Larry Walker launched his 27th of the season in a 10-9 win over Brooklyn.

Backup C Brad Ausmus announced his retirement at the end of the season.

It was Carlos Beltrán‘s turn to hit 2 out, but it took a bases loaded walk to Alomar in the bottom of the 9th for the Mounties to eke out a 10-9 win over Homestead.

The Mounties pounded out 22 hits, including 8 homeruns, in a 20-8 plastering of Homestead. Walker went deep twice, reaching 30 on the year, and Bob Watson, Rick Monday, Rusty Staub, Beltrán, Rodríguez, and Carter all added longballs. The offense was well distributed with 3 players scoring 3 runs, 4 players amassing 3 hits, and Beltrán and Walker driving in 4 runs each.

#Philadelphia Stars

The Stars gave up on Sherm Lollar, sending him to AAA and recalling Butch Wynegar. It’s not clear if Wynegar will step into a platoon with Mike Scioscia or if Scioscia will be the everyday backstop.

Chase Utley took advantage of a chance to hit 2nd in the lineup, going deep twice and leading the Stars to an 8-1 win over Indianapolis behind another strong outing for JM Ward, who improved to 3-1.

TWIWBL 56.10: Spring Training Notes – Homestead Grays

Spring Training Questions

Up to nine spots on the mound are up for grabs, including 3 rotation slots. Positional depth needs to be resolved in the lineup. Second round draft pick Judy Johnson will be given every shot to seize the 3B job.

Injuries

Daniel Hudson has missed most of camp so far, but might be back to show enough to make the opening day roster.

First Cuts

With 28 pitchers starting off in camp, Homestead clearly had a lot of work to do, with many decisions destined to be made on very limited data. Here’s who didn’t make the cut after the first week of Spring Training: starters Pink Hawley, Clayton Kershaw, John Candelaria, and Hal Carlson and relievers Mychal Givens, Ed Seward, and Ricardo Rincón.

With that many arms still in camp, the Grays only moved one C, Tim Thompson, out of camp, along with 3B’s Freddie Lindstrom and Brock Holt. Judy Johnson is hitless so far, but has impressed the coaching staff enough to stick around a little more.

Impressive starts from Rey Sáncehz and Jack Wilson at SS have forced Dick Groat out of camp, while Rennie Stennett remains, largely on the bases of his performances towards the end of last season. Jeff Kent has also been impressive, although Davey Johnson remains the presumptive starter at 2B.

Paul Waner is tearing the cover off the ball, but his brother Lloyd is hitless, meanings the siblings will be separated with Llyod heading back to the minors, along with CF Darren Lewis. That’s left a crowded OF still pretty clogged: Ralph Kiner has impressed with his power, Max Carey with his speed, and Goose Goslin is barely holding onto a spot. Of those three plus the remaining Waner, there looks to be–at most–a single roster spot available.

Second Cuts

Only 4 pitchers–Gary Lucas, Gary Nash, Ray Brown, and Bartolo Colón–have ERA’s over 2. Of those, Brown and Colón will be given some more time, but both Nash and Lucas were shipped off to the minors. That still leaves a ton of arms in camp, so something will have to give over the next week.

C Tim Thompson was shipped out. Rick Ferrell probably should be, but his defense and his WBL experience keeps him around for now.

18 year old Judy Johnson turned some heads with his defense, but needs some time in the minors. The Grays recalled Pedro Feliz for depth at 3B.

Goose Goslin and Max Carey were also sent down, although Carey was recalled a few days later, just to provide another glove in CF.

The Grays are in an interesting spot: a host of players who were assumed to not have much chance to make the team are performing fantastically, led by Ps Doug Drabek and Cliff Lee and position players Ed Kranepool, Paul Waner, Jeff Kent, Rey Sánchez, Chris Sabo, Cam Carreón, and Jack Wilson. This has created some unanticipated competition, keeping camp crowded but also making the next week quite crucial.

Third Cuts

Homestead continues to retool their pitching staff, with Bartolo Colón‘s poor Spring sending him to the minors along with Arodys Vizcaíno and Ping Gardner. Other than Francisco Liriano as their opening day starter and Josh Lindblom as their closer, though, nothing on the staff is settled.

The backup C slot continues to be challenging: Del Crandall has been spectacular, but doesn’t offer much defensively. Cam Carreón was demoted, but Peaches Graham and Rick Ferrell remain in the mix with Crnadall behind Josh Gibson.

Pedro Feliz, Max Carey, and Ralph Kiner were all sent down as well. That still leaves 1B and the OF overcrowded, and the Grays’ obsession with Rennie Stennett needs to probably come to an end. Owen Wilson and Davey Johnson–both essentially guaranteed roster spots due to their performance last year–are struggling mightily while Ed Kranepool, Rey Sánchez, and Jeff Kent are all tearing the cover off the ball.

Final Cuts

Needing to thin out the competition for the backup C role, Peaches Graham is the first to head down to the minors, followed by Rennie Stennett and Jack Wilson as the Grays tried to figure out their infield.

Cliff Lee‘s demotion to AAA was Homestead’s first step towards clarifying their staff for opening day. But that was as far as they got in the drive to cut to 30, as Del Crandall‘s Spring performance sent Rick Ferrell down, and two players with excellent Springs–Paul Waner and Ed Kranepool–were also sent down to receive steady ABs at AAA.

Babe Adams and the impressive teenager Catfish Hunter were both sent to the minors along with Jeff Kent, who had an excellent Spring but at 37 is not part of the Grays’ plans.

Earl Hamilton was the final cut from the pitching staff, leaving the Grays with a nasty set of choices. In the end, it came down to prized prospect Napolean Lajoie, incumbent 2B Davey Johnson, of OF sub extraordinaire Owen Wilson. The Grays, in a move met with much skepticism, decided to hand the 2B position to Lajoie, sending Johnson to AAA.

TWIWBL 45.3: Series XXXVII Notes – Effa Manley Division

#Cleveland Spiders

Pat Malone tied for the league lead in victories, allowing 1 run in 8 innings as the Spiders topped the Sea Lions 3-1. Malone now stands at 17-8 with Terry Adams picking up his 36th save. Trailing 1-0 in the 8th, Cleveland used Ron Blomberg‘s 43rd homerun of the year to tie the game and Hal Trosky‘s first career shot in the 9th to take the lead.

The Spiders were the first team in the WBL to clinch their division behind a sparkling complete game effort from Bill Steen, who improved to 13-3 and lowered his ERA to 2.93 in the 2-1 victory. Johnny Bates, who had 3 hits on the day, hit a solo homerun in the top of the 9th to seal the victory over San Francisco.

#Homestead Grays

Two solo shots from Andy Van Slyke weren’t enough as the Grays lost 9-6 to the Black Sox. Babe Adams talked his way into a start at DH and promptly went 3-for-4, making an argument for some more playing time when not on the mound for Homestead.

This came out of nowhere: Homestead powered out 19 hits and 15 runs in a 15-3 thrashing of Baltimore. Davey Johnson had 4 hits and little used backup catcher Rick Ferrell had 3 doubles as both he and Kevin Young drove in 3 runs. Adams, energized by his big day at the plate, threw 7 strong innings, improving to 2-3 on the year.

#Indianapolis ABC’s

Willie Mitchell, Clay Carroll, and Rob Dibble combined on a 4-hit shutout (Dibble allowed 2 in the 9th) as the ABC’s topped Philadelphia, 2-0. Mitchell improved to 9-5 and Dibble picked up his 30th save.

With Jake Stenzel sidelined for a few games, Indianapolis sent Chris Hammond to AAA and recalled Bo Diaz to help behind the plate.

#New York Black Yankees

New York got some bad news, as Red Ruffing–14-9 with a respectable 4.05 ERA on the year–will miss about 8 months with damage to his rotator cuff. Youngster Whitey Ford, who had a good year at AAA, was recalled to take Ruffing’s spot.

#Philadelphia Stars

The nightmare of Pete Alexander‘s initial season is over, as the promising-yet-underperforming pitcher will be shut down with an injured right shoulder. Brad Kilby–the closer at AAA all season–was recalled.

J.M. Ward had easily his best day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with his first homerun, but it wasn’t enough as the Stars lost 10-6 to Indianapolis. The game also cost the Stars the services of Roger Peckinpaugh for the rest of the season: quite a shame, as Peckinpaugh was slashing 328/347/493 and making an argument for the starting position next year. Gene DeMontreville was recalled for the final few games.

TWIWBL 18.3: Series XV Notes – Effa Manley Division

#Cleveland Spiders

John Ellis drove in 5 runs with 4 hits and 2 homeruns, leading the Spiders to a 10-3 victory over Houston. Stan Coveleski threw 7 solid innings, improving his record to 4-1.

Hardie Henderson was sent to AAA to make room for Bill Steen‘s return from injury. Despite a good recent start, Bob Feller moved to the bullpen, with Steen stepping back into the rotation. Rowland Office–he of the very early season heroics–was sent down as well, with Evan Longoria coming back to Cleveland. Larry Doby remains on the roster, but will see his playing time decrease significantly.

#Homestead Grays

Homestead shook up its pitching staff, demoting Frank Linzy and Billy Pierce to AAA, naming Stan Bahnsen as their #5 starter, and moving Michael Jackson into the closer role. Babe Adams and Cliff Lee were recalled. Peaches Graham was demoted to AAA, with Rick Ferrell being recalled and Jim Hegan released.

#Indianapolis ABC’s

Down a run in the top of the 9th and facing Miami’s Aroldis Chapman, things looked bleak for the ABC’s. But consecutive pinch hits from Dave Henderson and Johnny Bench tied the game and Oscar Charleston delivered the go-ahead run with a clean single to center. The comeback vindicated a strong start from David Price, who allowed 4 hits and 2 runs in 8 innings, moving to 2-4 on the year. Rob Dibble picked up his 9th save with a perfect bottom of the 9th.

Doc White has replaced Red Faber in the starting rotation for Indianapolis.

#Philadelphia Stars

Steve Carlton heads to the DL after being pulled having only thrown 2 innings against Memphis. He’ll miss 2 starts, at least. Fred Talbot was recalled from AAA.

Bob McClure was returned to AAA as the Stars continue to struggle to find both a couple more starters and a bridge to the excellent back end of their bullpen. In the meantime, John Montgomery Ward returns to the rotation, and Jack Easton was recalled. The Stars would be willing to ship Bill Dickey, Jimmy Rollins, and Mickey Doolin to AAA, but there just aren’t enough options. Dickey was moved down (making the preseason trade of, essentially, him for Mike Schmidt, look like a total fleecing), with Mike Scioscia moving up to the majors.

TWIWBL 1.0: Final Preseason Notes

#BAL

Bill Byrd was moved from the DL to the 5th rotation spot as expected–we’ll see if the risk pays off for the Black Sox. Miller Huggins, acquired from Indianapolis, steps into most of the playing time at 2B (Larry Gardner will play there some as well). Huggins cost Baltimore Rube Foster in a league where pitching is at a premium, so there’s some risk there.

Rick Ferrell, Don Aase, Jesse Burkett, and Bill Sweeney were all designated for assignment to make space on the 40 man roster.

#BBB

Birmingham has had to rejuggle some key parts of their roster as DH Emil Frisk, one of their standout Spring performers, will miss about 5 weeks with a concussion. The Black Barons have recalled Billy Southworth from AAA Atlanta.

#BRK

Tommy Corcoran showed enough to play at the WBL, but he still has minor league options, so along with Pee Wee Reese, untested Dickie Thon breaks camp at SS for Brooklyn.

#CAG

Julio Gotay went from competing for a WBL role at SS to being waived, as Chicago broke camp with Damian Jackson as a reserve IF instead.

#CLE

The Spiders picked up 3B Evan Longoria from Miami. Longoria will pair with Ken Keltner, sending Bob Elliott to AAA. Whit Wyatt will likely miss his first start of the season, with Stan Coveleski most likely to take his place.

#DET

The Wolverines made a minor deal coming out of Spring Training, picking up RP Ron Perranoski and 3B Billy Nash. Perranoski may see the big leagues this season; Nash is several years away. Si Johnson has some elbow tenderness, putting his first start in doubt: Detroit has 4 SP in their bullpen, so there are plenty of candidates to take his place.

#HOD

House of David RP Lee Smith was sent to AAA after he came off the DL. In a smaller deal, they obtained CF Jim Edmonds, who will start the year in the minors.

In a much bigger deal, the HoD picked up CF Pete Browning, Ps Rollie Fingers and Eddie Rommel, SS Bert Campenaris, and 1B Mark McGwire. All but

#IND

15 year old Piggy Ward was waived. The ABC’s added Rube Foster to their pitching staff from Baltimore, pushing Virgil Trucks to the bullpen to open the season.

#MIA

With 2 separate deals, Miami welcomed 1B/3B Jim Thome, CF Gus Bell, 1B Will Clark, C Harry Danning, and OF Carlos Moran to the club. It’s a little bit of a confusing haul, but a couple of things are clear from it: first, the club’s commitment to Martin Dihigo is solidified by clearing the way for the versatile 17 year old; secondly, Paul Molitor was recalled to Miami, presumably to play 2B while Dihigo develops.

Moran makes the roster as well, but Danning and Bell are both players for the future at this point.

#NYA

A bit of a blockbuster brought 27 year old Mike Schmidt–who had a historically bad Spring–over from Philadelphia. Schmidt steps into a lineup with no pressure, moving ahead of Doug DeCinces in the pecking order.

#NYG

The Gothams gained a starting 2B in Cookie Rojas and some veteran offense at 1B in Joe Adcock in a a trade with Miami. OF Yasiel Puig and P Livan Hernandez were also acquired in the deal, and moved to the minors.

#OTT

The most surprising news to come out of Ottawa is that SS Freddy Parent–considered one of the prizes on the market–remains with the team. Despite talent to offer at 1B as well, the Mounties were quiet on the preseason trading front.

#PHI

Moving Schmidt not only cleared the way for Scott Rolen at 3B, it also netted Philadelphia 2 big league talents in C Bill Dickey and OF Aaron Judge, as well as prospect 1B Prince Fielder. Dickey steps into a platoon with Sherm Lollar while Judge will begin the season in the minors.

3 P’s were released: Bob Moose, Edwin Jackson, and Hal Kelleher.

#SFS

The Seals made a deal that left their fan base scratching their head. But they’re confident that 20 year old SS Dick Lundy has a great future, OF Bobby Bonds will step right in at the WBL level, and Nick Altrock will prove a useful arm to have around. All 3 made the roster, sending Eddie Miller to the minors.

Spring Training Preview: Baltimore

  • Ned Garvin and Mark Baldwin are pretty much set, as much from their ability to eat innings as anything else.
  • It is likely that Rube Foster, Bob Welch, and Johnny Sain fill out the rotation, but Bill Byrd, Dennis Martinez, and Jim Palmer each could force their way into the conversation.
    • 10 games in, Foster and Welch have struggled, Sain has been magnificent, and Palmer has impressed. Byrd will miss the rest of Spring Training, and both Mike Mussina and McDaniel have joined Martinez in the back of rotation competition.
      • Sain & Baldwin are set, with Martinez, Garvin, and Palmer the most likely behind them, with Foster having an outside chance. Mussina and Welch were sent to minor league camp, with Milt Pappas being recalled in case an emergency SP is needed.
  • Similarly, both John Wetteland and Lindy McDaniel‘s role to start the season is likely to be determined by their Spring performance.
    • B.J. Ryan has struggled so far, and Bob Miller may push him on the closer role, with newly promoted Gregg Olsen also an outside possibility.
      • Ryan has lost the closing role, but nobody else has really jumped forward. Miller and Don Bessent have been the best, but the rest have been miserable, with Wetteland and Don Aase possibly pitching themselves off the roster.
  • The other major Spring contests are at SS, where both Bobby Wallace and Cal Ripken, Jr. look good enough to start and the OF, where the roles behind Merv Rettenmund and Frank Robinson need to be settled.
    • SS is just weird. The presumed starter, Wallace, hasn’t been able to hit; Ripken hasn’t shown any power, and defensive whiz Mark Belanger is hitting well over .500.
      • Belanger has cooled off: now he’s only hitting exactly .500. Nothing clarified here.
    • Right now, Ken Singleton, Alex Johnson, and Paul Blair are in the lead for the rest of the OF slots.
      • The OF is still a bit unsettled, but Jesse Burkett and Chick Stahl have been returned to AAA and 19 year old Bryce Harper recalled.
  • C is far too crowded. The problem is that the weaker candidates–Rick Ferrell and Ramon Hernandez especially–are performing as well as the presumed frontliners. Still, something must be done to free up playing time, sending Ferrell back to AAA.
    • Chris Hoiles is sent to AAA, reducing the Cs in camp to 3.
  • 3B is now difficult, as Brooks Robinson is struggling and both Harlond Clift and Bill Sweeney are knocking the cover off the ball.
