TWIWBL 17.2: Series XIV Notes – Cum Posey Division

#Chicago American Giants

Despite committing 4 errors, Chicago blew out the House of David 14-5 behind 4 hits from Dick Allen and 3 hits and 5 RBIs from Mike Fiore. The win went to Tricky Nichols, who improves to 5-2 in an outing that should also help rest the tired American Giants’ bullpen.

Dave Nilsson hit 2 homeruns and the Chicago bullpen survived some shaky moments–most notably a 3-run homerun by Dan Ford in the top of the 9th–as the American Giants beat the House of David 8-7. Shoeless Joe Jackson had 3 hits, and Frank Smith won his 2nd game of the year with a decent start.

Eddie Collins went 4-for-4 with 2 homeruns and Carlton Fisk and Fiore drove in 3 each as the American Giants put up 15 hits and 12 runs. The bad news was their pitchers gave up 18 hits–but only 9 runs, so Chicago beat the House of David once again, this time 12-9.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Stubby Overmire finally got his first victory of the year with another strong performance, delivering 8 innings of 5-hit, 2-run ball against Los Angeles. Gentleman Jim O’Rourke had 3 hits including his 3rd homerun of the year and 5 RBIs for Houston and Carlos Correa drove in 3 runs as well.

With Leon Day on the DL for 10 days with a shoulder injury, Houston brought Bones Ely back from AAA. The Colt 45’s also activated Casey Stengel from the DL, sending DJ LeMahieu to AAA.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Andy Pettite allowed 2 hits in 6 innings and Connie Johnson followed it with 3 perfect innings of relief as the Monarchs beat the Grays, 9-1. Rogers Hornsby and Gene Freese had 2 hits each and Hornsby hit a 3-run homerun (his 6th) and Albert Pujols a solo shot (his 9th). Pettite improved to 5-3 and Johnson picked up his first save.

Lou Brock had 3 hits and 4 stolen bases, scoring twice and helping the Monarchs ease to a 7-3 win over the Grays. Frank Castillo evened his record at 4-4 with 6 solid innings and Jose Rijo gave up 1 hit in 3 innings for his first save, although it may not be enough to keep Rijo in the WBL.

Robinson Cano led the way in a 15-5 demolition of Homestead, going 5-for-5 with 4 runs scored, 4 RBIs, and 2 homeruns. Ted Simmons and Boog Powell added 3 hits each with Powell and Brock driving in 3 each.

#Ottawa Mounties

Over 13 innings, the difference between Ottawa and Portland was … a wild pitch. In the top of the 13th, Anthony Rendon, who hit his 3rd homerun in the first inning to give the Mounties an early lead, singled off Elmer Brown. He moved to second on a walk to Carlos Delgado and to third when Brown induced a double play from Freddy Parent. Then Brown uncorked a wild pitch, giving the Mounties the 3-2 lead, which Johnny Podgajny was able to preserve in the bottom of the frame. Rendon went 3-for-6 in the game, with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. The victory went to Gary Lavelle, who moved to 3-1.

The injury news on Tom Henke was not good: he tore a ligament in his elbow, and will miss close to a year. Jimmy Key was recalled from AAA, with Lavelle the logical candidate to move into the closer role for the Mounties.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Ned Garvin blanked the Cleveland Spiders on 4 hits as Baltimore rolled to an 8-0 win behind 3 hits from Bobby Wallace and Ramon Hernandez‘ first homerun of the year. Garvin walked none and struck out 3, improving his record to 5-1 and lowering his ERA to 2.09.

Despite a subpar outing, Dennis Martinez joined the list of 7 game winners, moving to 7-1 as the Black Sox came from behind to blow out Cleveland, 10-4. Ken Singleton went 5-for-5, Dan McGann added 3 hits, and Paul Blair–yes, Paul Blair–added 2 homeruns as every Baltimore starter got at least 1 hit.

The Black Sox just find a way to win … down 4-0 after 6, and 5-4 heading into the 9th, Larry Gardner sent the fans home happy with a 2-run walkoff single. Curt Blefary hit 2 homeruns to give him 16 on the year. The win went to Buddy Groom, his first of the year.

#Chicago American Giants

Behind a strong start from Ben Sheets and 3 homeruns from Duffy Lewis, Chicago took apart Birmingham, 12-3. Allowing only 1 run on 3 hits over 7 innings, Sheets improved his record to 5-3. Lewis drove in 4 and Eddie Collins went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Ed Walsh lasted 8 pitches before having to leave the game with an apparent hamstring injury. The American Giants recalled Fernando Rodney from AAA to take Walsh’s place, and his starts should go to Joe Horlen or Frank Smith.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Trevor Hoffman‘s return from the DL moved Bones Ely back to AAA.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Robinson Cano hit 2 homeruns and drove in 4, leading the Monarchs to a 7-3 victory over Ottawa. Andy Pettite got his 4th victory of the year with 7 scoreless innings and Craig Kimbrel picked up his 8th hold. Ted Simmons also had 2 hits in a game that was a pitcher’s duel until the Monarchs exploded for 4 runs in the top of the 7th.

Willie McGee hit 2 homeruns and Frank Castillo allowed only 1 hit before running out of steam in the 8th inning as the Monarchs won the second game of the series, 9-2. McGee drove in 4, and Albert Pujols went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs as Castillo moved to 3-4 on the year.

#Ottawa Mounties

The news was not good on Bob Brown: the Mountie’s best starter all season will miss 4-5 months with a shoulder injury. Clayton Richard, 6-1 with a 3.65 at AAA Montreal, was recalled.

Ted Bowsfield threw 1 pitch in the 9-2 loss to Kansas City before having to leave the game. He was placed on the DL with the Mounties recalling Clark Griffith.

Ottawa’s 4-1 victory over the Monarchs to close out their series was costly, as Tom Henke had to leave with an apparent arm injury. A strong start from Old Hoss Radbourn improved his record to 4-3 and Johnny Podgajny made his WBL debut to relieve Henke and pickup the save. Tim Raines had 2 hits and Anthony Rendon 2 RBIs for the Mounties.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Curt Blefary hit 2 HRs, bringing his season total to a whopping 12, in an 8-4 loss to the Detroit Wolverines.

#Chicago American Giants

Cristobal Torriente was placed on the DL after severely twisting an ankle in the American Giants‘ 7-6 victory over San Francisco, a game won on a walk-off HR by Dick Allen. It could be a hard game for Chicago: Herb Pennock was injured as well, but may be able to make his next start and, more importantly, superstar 2B Eddie Collins left the game favoring his leg. His diagnosis is currently unknown.

Avisail Garcia was promoted from AAA Milwaukee to take Torriente’s place.

Collins will miss about 2 weeks: Nellie Fox was called up from AAA, but the bulk of the 2B duties will fall to Damian Jackson.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Casey Stengel–yes, Casey Stengel–hit the second longest HR in WBL history when he launched a 517ft mammoth shot off Miami‘s Bill Landrum, leading Houston to a 4-1 victory over the Cuban Giants.

Only slightly less improbably than the above paragraph: Toad Ramsey, who has been thoroughly mediocre at best, delivered a 4-hit shutout against Miami in a 3-0 Houston victory. Ramsey walked 7, so it wasn’t exactly a dominant performance; still, a 4-hitter is a 4-hitter.

#Kansas City Monarchs

How do you win a game when you give up 10 walks? By pounding out 23 hits and scoring 17 runs … the Monarchs blew away Memphis 17-3, led by Rogers Hornsby‘s 2 HRs and 6 RBIs. Hornsby, Stan Musial, and Ozzie Smith scored 3 runs each, and recently recalled Robinson Cano added 4 hits. Jose Rijo pitched well enough for the win, improving to 2-1, and Trevor Rosenthal and Craig Kimbrel provided 4 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.

#Ottawa Mounties

OF Larry Walker is heading back to the DL with a sprained wrist, leaving the Mounties without one of their only 2 higher end offensive performers so far (the other being Tim Raines). Rick Monday was recalled from AAA, increasing the pressure on Ken Griffey, Jr. to come out of his slump.

TWIWBL 7.2: Series VI Notes – Cum Posey Division

{With the day off on April 25th, it was a time of roster moves and lineup and pitching adjustments. As such, there are a few more notes for each team than usual.}

#Baltimore Black Sox

P Lindy McDaniel, massively ineffective over 7 appearances, was sent down to AAA with Mike Mussina coming back the other way. Chick Stahl is tearing up AAA, and if Paul Blair–currently slashing 205/287/337–continues to struggle, he may get a call-up in the next few weeks.

#Chicago American Giants

P Lee Meadows was waived and Joe Lake was sent down to AAA Milwaukee, with Sonny Dixon and Frank Smith joining Chicago. Herb Pennock will join the rotation, replacing Lake.

#Houston Colt 45’s

The final slot in the Colt 45’s rotation remains a mystery, with the team hoping someone from Stubby Overmire, Leon Day, and Dock Ellis steps forward.

Larry Hisle‘s continued struggles (194/275/222) sent him down to AAA San Antonio. 37 year-old Ken Caminiti was waived to make room for DJ LeMahieu‘s promotion to Houston.

Paul Goldschmidt‘s 176/300/265 line sees him likely getting much less playing time in the near future.

#Kansas City Monarchs

After a heart-breaking loss to the Black Yankees, the Monarchs had to do some roster juggling, both to help with bullpen fatigue and to bring in some help for Ozzie Smith at SS. Bob Gibson was sent back to AAA and Bill Doak was waived to free up roster space for RP Adam Russell and SS Jack Rowe.

But the Monarchs fought back, defeating the Black Yankees, first 8-3 and then on a walk-off 5-4 victory powered by Boog Powell‘s 2 HRs and Stan Musial‘s 4 hits in 4 at-bats.

The Monarchs ended up splitting the four game set with the Black Yankees–no mean feat.

1B Andre Thornton‘s slow start (139/333/250) earned him a trip to AAA St. Louis with 2B Robinson Cano, who was tearing up the league at 423/461/634 coming up to Kansas City. The roster still needed a RH OF, so Russell was sent back down after only a few days with the big league team in favor of Ducky Medwick.

#Ottawa Mounties

Randy Johnson may have done just enough–barely–to stay in the big leagues with a decent 5 inning performance against Los Angeles. After the game, RP Greg Holland hopped back on the AAA express, with the Mounties in desperate need for depth at 2B. They recalled George Cutshaw to help there (Cutshaw would have a nice debut, going 1-for-3 with a grand slam HR).

Freddy Parent delivered a 2-0ut, 2-run single that scored Carlos Delgado and Terry Puhl, giving Ottawa a walk-off victory against Los Angeles’ closer Joe Nathan, who fanned the first two batters before collapsing and giving up a three run lead.

Recently recalled Jim Clancy was called into duty as an emergency starter, and the jury is still out. On the one hand, 5 innings, only 1 run, and the victory in a 5-1 win over Los Angeles is great; on the other hand, the traffic on the basepaths was nonstop, with Clancy giving up 10 hits and 2 walks in the 5 innings. Gary Lavelle pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for his second hold, and Tom Henke finished it out for his 7th save.

The Mounties pitching staff is a mystery. They are committed to Johnson, despite the 25 year-old’s 7.27 ERA, as well as to 19 year-old Ken Griffey, Jr, who is only slashing 205/253/217 to date. Gary Peters has been very ineffective, and will spend some time at AAA trying to work out his kinks, joining John Olerud in Montreal with veteran 1B/OF Roy Sievers and P Jamie Moyer heading to the big time (Terry Mulholland was waived to make room for Moyer).

The fifth rotation slot is still unsettled, with Moyer, Clancy, and Monk Dubiel all in play.

Season Preview: Wandering House of David

In Team News

There is a lot of talent throughout this organization, but they may be a year or two away from being real contenders. The bullpen seems solid, and CC Sabathia and Nick Altrock look like true front of rotation arms. The offense looks solid, but the real story is the amount of talent top to bottom under the age of 24.

Notes

Dick Tidrow did barely enough to keep a roster spot in the bullpen, which was just about the only question is a fairly settled pitching staff, although he is most likely to be sent down when Lee Smith comes off the DL … Gabby Hartnett has been so miserable in Spring Training that not only has he lost the starting C spot to Elrod Hendricks, there was an argument that Frank Chance deserved the backup role. Hartnett’s glove keeps him on the roster … Dan Ford cooled off towards the end of Spring Training, leaving him in AAA to start the season … the final cuts were pretty difficult. With roster space at a premium, the luxury of a lefty specialist is hard to justify, sending Arnold Carter to AAA … then you have the case of Dick Lundy and Frank Grant. Both of these 20 year olds have great futures ahead of them, but there isn’t room on the roster for both of them right now, and Grant’s slightly better bat keeps him on the roster for now … finally, a moment for Robinson Cano, who hit .373 this Spring and still couldn’t earn a roster spot.

34 year old P Dick Tidrow is the oldest player on the opening day roster (if he gets sent down, it’s 32 year old Joakim Soria), with 20 year olds 3B Ron Santo and 2B Frank Grant the youngest.

Lundy and C Frank Chance are the best prospects at AAA, with 19 year old Cap Anson not likely to stay at AA very long.

Spring Training Preview: House of David

In 2000 Spring Training, Team News

The pitching staff is relatively set, although there is competition between Nick Altrock, Lynn Brenton, Wade Miley, and Lee Smith for some bullpen roles.
- Rick Reuschel has been poor and Frank Sullivan, Bob Rush, Fergie Jenkins, and Jack Taylor have been no better than acceptable. So the rotation, other than C.C. Sabathia, is a lot more open now. Altrock has been quite good and should get a shot, as will Kerry Wood, who was called up when Pedro Strop went down injured.
  - Sabathia, Altrock, and Miley seem to have settled rotation spots, with Jenkins and Sullivan a little ahead of Taylor and Rush. Reuschel has been sent to AAA with 15 year old Joe Nuxhall recalled to get a taste of big league camp.
- In the bullpen, Jeff Heathcock, Brenton, and Smith have all suffered, while Joakim Soria and Bruce Sutter have moved up the depth chart.
  - The back 3 of Sutter, Soria, and Tom Niedenfuer has been spectacular. Heathcock, Wood, and Smith are all in danger of missing the opening day roster at this point. Brenton has been sent to AAA with Dick Tidrow and Hector Rondon being called into camp.
C is pretty wide open, with Gabby Hartnett and Elrod Hendricks competing for the starting job. Frank Chance could force himself into the picture as well, although it is doubtful his future is behind the plate.
- So far, Hendricks has been crushing the ball, while Hartnett is yet to really get going.
Anthony Rizzo, Mark Grace, and Dave Altizer are in open competition at 1B, as are Dick Lundy and Ernie Banks at SS.
- Banks has moved well ahead of Lundy at SS.
- Altizer and Cap Anson are struggling mightily to contribute, and may miss the roster.
Dan Ford, Danny Green, or Sammy Sosa need a great Spring to force themselves into the OF picture.
- The Philadelphia OF has been on fire all Spring, but Ford is certainly in the conversation, and Green has played himself back to AAA.
  - Patsy Dougherty is struggling, but overall this group is smashing the ball. Olaf Henriksen has been recalled for some more OF flexibility.
Robinson Cano and Frank Grant have been crushing the ball at 2B, casting doubts on Ryne Sandberg as the starter. Similarly, Richie Hebner and Jung Ho Kang are outperforming Ron Santo at 3B.
- Competition at 2B has tightened up between the 3 of them.
- Kang has gone ice cold, earning himself a trip to AAA.
