TWIWBL 61.4: Effa Manley Division

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Terry Forster began a rehab assignment, with an eye towards returning to the active roster later this week.

Ray Dandridge‘s offensive struggles have accelerated Germany Smith‘s return to full time status, with Smith taking over at SS. Dandridge will still see a lot of playing time around the diamond, but he–along with Frank Isbell–are in danger of (not) hitting themselves right out of the league.

Juan Mateo will miss about 4 months of action, clearing space for Forster’s return.

#Homestead Grays

The Grays recalled Corey Kluber from his rehab assignment, sending the struggling Tim Lincecum to AAA.

#New York Gothams

Willie Mays had 4 hits and 3 RBIs and Pinky Higgins went deep twice as the Gothams beat the Mounties, 8-2. Don Sutton improved to 3-1 with 10 whiffs in 7 plus innings of work for New York.

Mays and Benny Kauff each went deep twice as the Gothams poured it on late for an 8-3 win over Philadelphia. Gaylord Perry improved to 2-3 with 7 solid innings of work.

#Ottawa Mounties

With Ryan Dempster‘s struggles, the return of closer Tom Henke after a year away can’t come soon enough. Henke should start a rehab assignment later this week, joining Johnny Podgajny in trying to make their way back to the active roster.

#Philadelphia Stars

With Dave Stieb seemingly massively overmatched, the Stars sent him to AAA, recalling Ray Collins from a rehab assignment. Collins will slot into the bullpen for a while, with Larry Jackson taking Stieb’s spot in the rotation.

Bullet Joe Rogan has been the best hitter for the Stars so far this season, and while he’ll move around a lot, it’s expected that he’ll be out there virtually every day from here on out.

Hardie Henderson continues his great start, combining with Brad Kilby, Tim Belcher, and Ted Kennedy on a 4 hit shutout in a 5-0 win over the House of David. Henderson improved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.64 on the day.

TWIWBL 36.3: Series XXVIII Notes – Effa Manley Division

#Cleveland Spiders

Mel Harder moves into the rotation, replacing the injured Whit Wyatt, a move which is sure to disappoint the fan base that was hoping for a major pitching acquisition at the deadline. They’ll have to be satisfied with the recall of Bob Feller, who is far, far too good for AAA, with Ken Schrom being returned.

The fan base may be appeased by the arrival of SS Arky Vaughan from Homestead, who may give the Spiders the best top-to-bottom lineup in the league. Vaughan’s arrival sent Bill Knickerbocker to AAA and moved Bill Dahlen to the role of defensive replacement.

Sudden Sam McDowell was returned to AAA as Yordano Ventura was recalled from a rehab assignment after missing a couple months through injury.

#Homestead Grays

John Candelaria and Ray Brown were recalled from AAA, with Candelaria sliding into the rotation. More dramatically, Arky Vaughan‘s departure means the team is committing to the idea that Honus Wagner can make the transition to SS, which also opens the door for Andy Van Slyke and Chief Wilson to see more time, given how well they have hit over recent weeks (Van Slyke is currently slashing 404/436/649, Wilson 392/395/747–clearly neither is sustainable).

Tom Brown was sent to AAA, as the Grays needed another SS (Jack Wilson).

Rick Reichardt had 2 homeruns and 5 RBIs in a topsy-turvey, 8-6 win over Indianapolis. Mike Epstein and Wagner also went deep in the contest.

#Indianapolis ABC’s

Doc Hoblitzell was returned to AAA with Virgil Trucks, Francisco Cordero, and Octavio Dotel heading up to AAA. The ABC’s have quite a few pitchers who have struggled in Indianapolis and dominated in Cincinnati, so we’ll see how that goes.

Oscar Charleston had 3 hits, 2 of which were triples, but the ABC’s were unable to hold on to several leads, losing 8-6 to Homestead.

#New York Black Yankees

Well, we’ll see. They certainly added some bullpen arms, whether it’s enough quality is yet to be determined. Lady Baldwin and Dave Righetti were returned to AAA, clearing the room for Aroldis Chapman (who slides directly into the closer slot), Dick Tidrow, and Rheal Cormier. Jamie Moyer slides into the back of the rotation.

Waite Hoyt broke out of a slump in a big way, with a complete game victory over the Gothams, allowing 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 3 and not walking a batter. Mickey Mantle and Eric Davis went deep for the Black Yankees as Hoyt improved to 9-6.

#Philadelphia Stars

As important as any trade, the Stars will get Pete Alexander back from injury at some point in the next week after a quick rehab assignment. In the meantime, Hardie Henderson was brought up to deepen the bullpen and Tim Belcher may get another start or two until Alexander returns.

Slugging OF Aaron Judge was recalled from AAA. Wayne Gomes was sent to AAA, with Alexander making his long awaited return.

TWIWBL 35.0: Deadline Day Games

Due to a couple rainouts, there were 2 games played while the teams scrambled to rearrange their rosters.

#New York Gothams @ Philadelphia Stars

This was an interesting one. Tim Belcher, called up just for this start, did well, holding the Gothams to 2 runs in 5 innings, while Don Sutton gave up 5. So it looked good for the Stars until the Gothams exploded for 8 runs in the 8th inning, on their way to a 12-8 victory.

Joe Adcock tied a league record with 3 homeruns for New York, driving in 5. Adcock had 4 hits and Jimmy Sheckard added 3, all doubles. The Gothams had 10 extra-base hits on the day. George Hendrick had 4 hits for Philadelphia in a losing cause, and Willie Davis and Sherm Lollar added 3 each.

TWIWBL 34.3: Series XXVII Notes – Effa Manley Division

#Cleveland Spiders

Needing a starter, the Spiders put Whit Wyatt on the DL while still awaiting a full diagnosis of his injury. Sudden Sam McDowell was recalled for the game against Homestead. McDowell struggled mightily, but Lance Berkman won the game with a walk-off grandslam, his 13th of the year and 7th since joining the Spiders. Chuck Knoblauch and Johnny Bates added 3 hits each.

Stan Coveleski improved to 10-2 on the year with 8 good innings in a 5-3 win over Homestead.

4 hits by Kenny Lofton, 3 from Sammy Strang, and 2 homeruns from Jake Stahl weren’t enough, as Knoblauch popped out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to thwart a furious comeback from a 9 run deficit in a game Cleveland lost, 11-10.

The news on Wyatt was quite bad, as he will miss close to a year with an elbow injury. This makes the Spiders even more likely to pursue some trades tomorrow.

#Indianapolis ABC’s

Barry Larkin just never could get it going for the ABC’s and Joe Morgan‘s return from his rehab assignment spelled Larkin’s return to AAA. Morgan picked right up in his first game back, scoring twice on 2 hits and 2 walks, and Johnny Bench added 3 hits as Doc White improved to 6-2 with the 6-3 victory over Ottawa.

Morgan’s 4 walks in a 10-6 loss to Ottawa tied a league record. It was a frustrating game for the ABC’s, as they left a staggering 15 runners on base int he contest, including 8 in scoring position with 2 outs. Hal Morris, Bob Bescher, and Denis Menke each had 3 hits, to no avail.

#New York Black Yankees

The Yankees have finally abandoned their bullpen. The need for a starter forced a move, with Sparky Lyle heading to AAA and Dave Righetti, who has excelled since struggling in the WBL earlier in the season, was recalled. Righetti responded with 6 strong innings in a 9-1 victory for New York. Eric Davis, Don Mattingly, and Lou Gehrig each had 2 hits, and Babe Ruth regained the league lead with his 32nd homerun.

#Philadelphia Stars

Tom Sturdivant‘s stay at the WBL was brief, as the righthander was outright waived to clear room for Tim Belcher to make the start.

TWIWBL 24.16: Mid-Season Reviews – Philadelphia Stars

Summary

Meh. It feels like they Stars have underperformed all year, yet they set basically at .500, although with little chance to catch the Black Yankees in the Effa Manley Division.

If you believe that numbers don’t lie, the Stars should be in selling mode, as they rank in the bottom 25% in most categories.

What’s Gone Right

Setups. Ron Reed and Rheal Cormier have been spectacular out of the pen for the stars, with Reed probably the most effective reliever in the league.

The Outfield. Willie Davis has been fantastic in CF, and George Hendrick, Gavvy Cravath, and Rico Carty have been good around him. Cravath and Carty (and solid contributor Buck Freeman) are in their mid-30’s and may be attractive trade bait.

Rolen Along. The decision to trade Mike Schmidt in the preseason cleared the way for Scott Rolen, a decision that looks good right now, with Rolen posting an OPS in the mid .800s with great defense at 3B.

What’s Gone Wrong

The Final Two. The number 4 and 5 starters have been miserable all year. John Montgomery Ward has shown signs of turning it around, but Larry Jackson is really just a shot in the dark after the failures of Don Carman and, most disappointingly, Robin Roberts.

Catching. Bill Dickey was supposed to be the answer behind the plate. He’s at AAA now, and Sherm Lollar is barely acceptable as the full-time backstop.

MI, Oh My. Chase Utley at 2B has been in a mammoth slump, putting his position in doubt. Over at SS, it’s just not possible to field well enough to justify Mickey Doolin‘s offense, and Jimmy Rollins has been even worse as a potential replacement.

Key Storylines

This team is likely to look quite different after the early trades, so the storylines are likely to shift as well. But the pieces–Davis, Hendrick, Cravath, Rolen–are there.

Trading Outlook

SELLING.

This is more because the team feels like it wants a shakeup and there are enough veterans they could get some good talent in return. Just at the big league level, they could be looking to move Carty, Cravath, Cormier, Ron Reed, and Bob Howry.

AAA Shuttle

José Ramírez has done well since his callup, so that’s something. Dickey, Gene Demontreville, and Al Smith have all been sent down, with others to follow soon.

Midseason Changes

Larry Jackson moves into the rotation. OF Sherry Magee and IF Jimmy Rollins head to AAA with Roger Peckinpaugh coming all the way from AA.
