TWIWBL 40.1: Series XXXII Notes – Bill James Division

#Detroit Wolverines

Bob Bailey hit the 10 Day DL with a hamstring issue, prompting the Wolverines to reach all the way down to AA to recall Olmedo Sáenz, mostly for his ability to play both infield corner spots.

#Los Angeles Angels

Wally Moon was recalled from a rehab assignment, with Spud Johnson heading back to the minors.

Harry Howell tossed a 5-hit shutout as the Angels beat Miami 5-0. After the 140 pitch, 9 strikeout performance, Howell’s record improves to 5-6 on the season. Bobby Grich was injured in the game, sending him to the DL for at least 2-3 weeks. 22 year old Wally Backman has been tearing up both AA and AAA, and now gets his chance with the big league club.

José Reyes and Steve Garvey had 3 hits each and Mike Trout drove in 4, leading the Angels to an 8-2 win over Miami. Pud Galvin improved to 5-7, allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run over 7 innings.

#New York Gothams

Johan Camargo was promoted to the WBL with Mark Loretta being sent down in an exchange of bench pieces for the Gothams.

Christy Mathewson continued his run of form, becoming the first 15 game winner in the league as he and 3 relievers combined to shutout Indianapolis despite allowing 10 hits. Pete Runnels had 3 hits and Wes Westrum hit a key homerun to give the Gothams the win.

The pitching continued to dominate as Pete Donohue improved to 6-2 with a 3-hit blanking of the ABC’s, walking 2 and fanning 8. Light-hitting Brandon Crawford had 3 hits and Will Clark, George Van Haltren, and Johnny Callison drove in 2 rusn each in the 7-0 victory.

#Wandering House of David

Jack Taylor continues to roll, allowing only 1 run and 5 hits over 7 innings en route to his 14th victory of the season. Taylor lowered his ERA to a league-leading 2.99, and Bruce Sutter picked up his 19th save with a perfect 9th. George Stone hit his 25th homerun in the 8th, giving the House of David the 2-1 victory over Portland. Sutter was hurt in his outing, but looks likely to only be out for a few days.

Pete Browning and Frank Chance had 3 hits each and Ryne Sandberg hit his 20th homerun of the year, leading the House of David to a 6-2 win over Portland. CF Jim Edmonds had 3 kills on the day, throwing out a runner at each base (other than first).

Playoff Series of Note

From here on out, it’s pretty much all about the playoffs.

The Bill James Division has been thrown into a bit of chaos, with the Detroit Wolverines falling from first to third place over the past series. The Wolverines dropped 3 out of 4 to the New York Black Yankees, while the New York Gothams swept the Indianapolis ABC’s. That leaves the Gothams 1.5 games ahead of both Detroit and the Wandering House of David. The House of David will host the Chicago American Giants in the featured matchup of Series XXXIII, while Detroit has an easier opponent (the basement dwelling Memphis Red Sox) than the Gothams, who visit Birmingham.

Three consecutive losses leave the Cleveland Spiders clinging to a 1 game edge over the Black Yankees in the Effa Manley Division. This race is key as, right now, the Black Yankees would miss the postseason, trailing Portland for the final wild card slot by 2 games.

The Cum Posey and Marvin Miller Divisions remain unchanged, with Baltimore leading the American Giants by 4 games in the former and Birmingham clingnig to a 1/2 game lead over Portland in the latter.

Really, that’s it: Houston, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Indianapolis are all between 5 and 10 games out of the wild card race, so technically we’re saying there’s a chance …

TWIWBL 39.3: Series XXXI Notes – Effa Manley Division

#Cleveland Spiders

Bill Dahlen was injured in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Gothams. After the twinbill, Dahlen hit the DL with Bill Knickerbocker returning to the big leagues.

The Spiders found themselves in need of a starter, forcing them to send Bob Feller to AAA temporarily, with Hank Gastright being recalled for the start. Gastright was exceptional, allowing 4 hits and 1 run through 7 while striking out 6. Solo homeruns from 4 Spiders (John Ellis, Ron Blomberg, Jake Stahl, and–shockingly–Jim Gantner) were all he needed as the Spiders won 4-1 with Terry Adams picking up his 29th save.

#Homestead Grays

Mike Epstein hit 2 homeruns and drove in 4 as the Grays beat Ottawa 8-6.

With Honus Wagner out for the rest of the year, the Grays recalled 22 year old Frank Taveras from AA. Andy Van Slyke will become the everyday 3B in Wagner’s absence, with Jack Wilson getting the bulk of the action at SS.

Roberto Clemente had 4 hits, nudging his average close to .300, and Epstein added 3 as the Grays topped Ottawa, 9-5. John Candelaria overcame a rough start to improve his record to 2-1, making a case to remain in the Homestead rotation.

#Indianapolis ABC’s

Jake Stenzel‘s 4 hits brought his batting average up to .300, but weren’t enough as Indianapolis dropped a 7-5 decision to Chicago in 12 innings.

Virgil Trucks was demoted to AAA with Tony Mullane next in line to get a shot in the ABC’s 6-man rotation.

Tommy Helms and Joe Morgan both picked up knocks, sending Helms to the DL with Barry Larkin being recalled to Indianapolis.

TWIWBL 39.2: Series XXXI Notes – Cum Posey Division

#Chicago American Giants

Joe Jackson reached base 6 times in 7 late appearances with 3 walks and 3 hits to lead the American Giants to a 7-5 victory of Indianapolis in 12 innings. A rare poor outing by AJ Minter allowed the ABC’s to tie the game, but Akinori Otsuka pitched well in the extra frames to improve to 4-5 on the year.

José Abreu‘s continued struggles netted him a return to AAA with Cristóbal Torriente coming of the DL.

#Houston Colt 45’s

3 hits from George Brett, including a go-ahead triple in the 8th inning, powered Houston to a 6-4 victory over the Black Yankees. Luke Gregerson pitched 2 scoreless innings for the victory and Billy Wagner notched his 19th save despite a shaky 9th inning.

With their bullpen greatly fatigued, Toad Ramsey put in a masterful performance, allowing only 1 unearned run in a 2-1 victory over the Black Yankees. Andrés Galarraga had 3 hits, raising his average to .336 in the game which saw Ramsey even his record at 11-11 with his league leading 4th complete game of the season.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Stan Musial had 2 homeruns giving him 23 on the year. He and Willie McGee had 3 hits each, but it wasn’t enough as the Monarchs fell to the House of David, 8-4.

José Rijo threw a 5-hit complete game shutout, and four Monarchs–Steve Evans, Ducky Medwick, Frankie Frisch, and Robinson Canó–went deep as Kansas City beat the House of David 7-0.

Bill Singer, quite effective since being recalled, was injured in the opening game. It took a couple days, but it looks like Singer will miss about a month, prompting the Monarchs to recall Jock Menefee from AAA.

#Ottawa Mounties

Roy Sievers went deep twice and the newly recalled Sam Thompson hit his first career dinger, but it wasn’t enough as the Mounties fell to Homestead 8-6.

#Detroit Wolverines

The Wolverines scored 19 runs on 20 hits in a blowout of San Francisco. Bob Bailey had 4 hits and 6 RBIs, Geoff Jenkins scored 4 times, and Jenkins, Bailey, and Ernie Lombardi all went deep in support of Charlie Root‘s strong 8 innings in the rout.

Buddy Napier‘s return from the DL pushed Whitey Wilshere back to AAA.

#Memphis Red Sox

Mookie Betts had 4 hits in 4 at-bats, leading Memphis to an 8-2 victory over Miami.

Stubby Overmire had a 1-hit shutout heading into the 9th, and finished with a 3-hitter as Memphis blanked Miami 7-0. Billy Bryan had 4 hits, including his 7th homerun of the year, Manny Ramírez had 3 and Bill White drove in 3 in the victory.

#New York Gothams

Christy Mathewson became the league’s first 14 game winner, opening a doubleheader with a scoreless 7 innings against Cleveland in a 4-0 win for New York.

Closer Brian Wilson–perhaps the dominant closer in the league with 24 saves and an ERA of 1.00–will spend a stint on the 10 day DL with shoulder inflammation. Sergio Romo was recalled from AAA.

#Wandering House of David

Joe Harris was placed on the DL and is expected to miss about 2 weeks. IF Frank Grant, who started the year with the big league team, was recalled from AA.

Anthony Rizzo hit 2 homeruns, giving him 11 on the year (in under 150 ABs) to lead the House of David to an 8-3 win over Kansas City. Bob Rush turned in a solid 7 innings, improving to 12-5 on the season. In less positive news, reserve C Gabby Hartnett was injured, forcing him to the DL and opening a shot for Frank Chance‘s return to the WBL.

Chance hit his first career homerun in his first game back in support of a fine outing by Wade Miley, who improved to 7-4 on the year with over 7 innings of 1 run ball. Jim Edmonds and Rizzo went deep as well as the House of David beat Kansas City, 4-1.

TWIWBL 39.0: Series XXXI Notes

There’s less than a month left in the first season of the WBL. Well, the first season on OOTP, the first season in this form. Whatever.

One month to go and we still have pennant races in each of the four divisions. The playoffs have 3 rounds, with 8 teams making the post-season (the four division winners, and 4 wild cards).

Baltimore, who has the best record in the league at 74-52, also has the biggest lead, ahead of the Chicago American Giants by 4 games in the Cum Posey Division. But Chicago leads the wild card race, so both teams look likely to mkae the playoffs.

The Cleveland Spiders are ahead of the New York Black Yankees by 3 games in the Effa Manley Division. However, the Black Yankees are currently out of the playoffs entirely, also 3 games out of the wildcard race. The two teams meet in the final 4 games of the season, so if the Black Yankees can stay close, they’ll have a chance.

The Bill James Division is the tightest, with 3 teams currently slated to make the postseason, led by the Detroit Wolverines, who are 1.5 games ahead of the New York Gothams. The Wandering House of David are currently in the final wild card spot, only 1/2 game behind the Gothams. The House of David have a series left against each of the other two, so there is still plenty of opportunity for churn here.

Finally, over in the Marvin Miller Division, the shocking Birmingham Black Barons hold a narrow 1/2 lead over the Portland Sea Dogs. The race is close, but with Portland tied with Chicago for the lead in the wild card race, both teams seem likely to make the playoffs. The challenge here is for Birmingham, who have remaining series against Chicago, the Gothams, Baltimore, and Detroit.

A 3-way tie for second place in the league in triples puts Houston‘s George Brett and Miami‘s Alejandro Oms on this list for the first time all season. On the one hand, neat-0, on the other hand, it dilutes from the overall excellence.

You know there are some classic old-school arguments going on: Los Angeles‘ 3B Doug Rader is leading the league in hits and RBIs and, you know, is just so valuable. But the argument just pales when faced with the overall dominance of the Black Yankees’ Babe Ruth.

TWIWBL 38.4: Series XXX Notes – Marvin Miller Division

#Birmingham Black Barons

The Black Barons just keep rolling. This time, it was 5 RBIs from Herman Long and a strong 7 innings from Vic Willis in a victory over Kansas City.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

4 hits from John Briggs were wasted as the Royal Giants lost 7-2 to Ottawa. That brought Briggs’ average up to over .350, and while it’s still early (his WBL career is only 23 games in), it certainly helps to silence the critics who were protesting that the 20 year old would be overmatched, despite his spectacular showing at AA.

Briggs was injured in the final game of the series, and will miss 2-3 weeks; Ty Cline was recalled from AAA.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Braden Looper has been named Miami’s closer for the time being.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Cliff Lee did well in his brief WBL debut (273/333/409), but with Joe Mauer‘s return from a rehab assignment, Lee heads back to AAA and the Sea Dogs once again find themselves with the conundrum of what to do with Mauer (313/389/504) and Pudge Rodríguez (331/350/512). There is a similar issue in CF with Bobby Murcer (316/400/555) and Gary Pettis (405/489/557 with great speed and defense). These are good problems to have.

For now, Mauer and Rodríguez return to their platoon arrangement, and Pettis continues to be the first man off the bench.

With Walter Johnson sidelined for another week or so, Atlee Hammaker has moved into the rotation.

TWIWBL 38.3: Series XXX Notes – Effa Manley Division

#Homestead Grays

Babe Adams was recalled to take Stan Bahnsen‘s spot on the roster as the commissioner’s office finally approved his trade to Cleveland.

Homestead couldn’t decide between Ray Brown, Adams, and Carlos Zambrano for the start of the opening game against the House of David … so they found a way to use all three of them. Brown was highly ineffectual in the start, not making it out of the 3rd inning; Adams came in briefly and had to leave with pain in his elbow; and Zambrano managed to walk 5 batters in 2 innings. Grays pitchers walked 12 in the game, and the team was drubbed 11-0.

Adams was put on the DL, with Cliff P. Lee being recalled. Michael Jackson and Josh Lindblom swapped roles once again, with Lindblom taking over as closer for the time being.

#Indianapolis ABC’s

The ABC’s cranked out 19 hits in a 12-4 drubbing of Portland. Ed Charles, Denis Menke, Jake Stenzel, and Hal Morris each had 3 RBIs and Dave Henderson drove in 3 on his 9th homerun of the year.

Oscar Charleston had 4 hits, Tommy Helms drove in the winning run in the 10th inning and Edd Roush added a 3-run homer for good measure in an 8-5 victory for the ABCs.

#New York Black Yankees

Ron Guidry‘s struggles may have a cause, as the long left hander was forced out of his start with a sore shoulder and will miss at least his next 2 starts. AJ Burnett–fantastic at AAA since an early season demotion–was recalled.

Lou Gehrig went deep twice, driving in 4, and Babe Ruth and Mike Schmidt added homeruns in an 8-6 victory over Miami. Jack Scott improved to 12-5 and once again the revamped New York bullpen held up as Dick Tidrow, Rheal Cormier, and Goose Gossage allowed 1 run in 3 innings to preserve the victory with Gossage picking up his 2nd save of the season.

#Philadelphia Stars

Willie Davis and Chase Utley each had 4 hits, with Utley and Bobby Abreu each driving in 3 in the Stars’ 12-4 victory over Detroit. 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th blew what had been a close game wide open.

#Kansas City Monarchs

In need of a starter, the Monarchs sent Joe Blong to the minors, recalling 20 year old Bill Singer for his WBL debut.

#Ottawa Mounties

Ottawa keeps flirting with being a good team. Old Hoss Radbourn had a no-hitter into the 7th inning, but he and Johnny Podgajny got touched for 5 runs in the 7th and 8th in a 5-3 loss to Brooklyn. The CF rotation continues to show signs of life, as Ken Griffey, Jr. hit his 3rd homerun of the season to account for all 3 of the Mounties’ runs.

With Álex Rodríguez out for a couple weeks with an eye injury, Ottawa recalled Bernie Allen from AAA. Roberto Alomar will get most of the starts at SS for the Mounties.

#Detroit Wolverines

Whitey Wilshere‘s return from a rehab stint means Jason Schmidt‘s stay with Detroit is very fleeting.

#Los Angeles Angels

Sid Fernandez had some good innings, but his tendency to add some truly horrid ones left him with a 13.50 ERA, and a trip back to AAA. His replacement is Ron Romanick–who sports an ERA of 15.12 himself in 2 games in the bigs–was called up for the start.

Romanick dropped his ERA by almost 5 runs, but still headed back to AAA with Tom Seaver being recalled for another shot at the WBL.

#Memphis Red Sox

Bill Doak‘s success in the bullpen has moved him into the starting rotation as Memphis struggles to find something to salvage the season: they know what they have in Tim Wakefield, they might as well find out more about what Doak can do.

After losing the lead in the 7th, Memphis used clutch hits from Claude Ritchey and Ted Williams for a walk-off victory over Baltimore. Sammy Sosa–who may finally be justifying his repeated chances at the WBL for 2 separate teams–went deep for the Red Sox, as did the slumping Francisco Lindor.

#Wandering House of David

Eddie Rommel was returned to AAA with Tom Niedenfuer‘s rehab assignment ending.

Pete Browning–who seems poised to take over the league lead in batting if he can stay healthy–had 3 hits and 5 RBIs in the House of David’s 13-4 victory. Browning had 2 homeruns and a triple and Dan Ford added 3 hits as well in the victory. Bunny Downs injured his hamstring running the bases and was placed on the DL after the game with Skeeter Barnes called up to take his place.
