Brooklyn Royal Giants

Dick Redding struck out 12 over 7.1 innings in a 7-4 win over Ottawa. Redding allowed only 2 hits, and added a homerun of his own in the victory.

Smokey Joe Williams did much the same thing the next day: 11 strikeouts over 7 innings, a homerun, and a 9-6 win that moved him to 3-1 on the year.

Homestead Grays

Ricardo Rincón goes to the disabled list, and Gary Lucas comes up from Louisville to take the left-handed relief seat.

New York Gothams

Christy Mathewson struck out 11 over 7.2 innings in Indianapolis and won his 6th without a loss, 4-1. It was a 1-0 game until Grant Johnson hit a 3-run homerun with 2 out in the 8th; Brian Wilson closed it for his 7th save.

Tip O’Neill has begun a rehab assignment, offering an intriguing 2-way possibility when he’s recalled.

Ottawa Mounties

Randy Johnson, Kevin Gross, and BJ Ryan combined for a 4-hit shutout in a 6-0 win over Kansas City.

Philadelphia Stars

Harmon Killebrew hit 2 solo homeruns — one to open a 3-run 6th, the second in the 7th for the lead — to finish a 6-5 comeback win over Birmingham. John Clarkson won it in relief and Mark Melancon got the save as he continues to fill in for the injured Bob Howry.

Brooklyn Royal Giants

The news on Nap Rucker‘s DL stint could have been worse, with the hurler due to miss about 5 weeks. Pedro Guerrero will be out about the same length of time, maybe a little longer, with Jim Gentile being recalled from AAA Queens, where he hit .311 with 47 homeruns last year.

Fernando Valenzuela struck out 10 in 6 innings at Homestead for his first win of the season, a welcome change from the misery of his debut performances on the season.

Homestead Grays

The very promising Tim Lincecum has begun a rehab assignment after a long-term injury.

Ottawa Mounties

Old Hoss Radbourn, Kevin Gross, Ryan Dempster and Billy Koch combined to 1-hit Philadelphia in a game that spanned 2 days due to a rain delay, with the Mounties winning 7-0. Álex Rodríguez hit 2 out in that game and did it again the next day.

Dupee Shaw was injured, with Gary Peters being recalled.

Philadelphia Stars

Bullet Joe Rogan hit 2 homeruns in a 5-3 win at the House of David, then did it again few days later. That’s 9 on the season for the unique 2-way talent.

Cycles

Longest HRs

{ OOTP has, for a long time had a problem with surreally long HR distances. So we threw math at it–these distances are modified based on the game’s projected exit velocity, which puts a cap on how far the ball could actually travel. Far more realistic, although these are probably still running a tad high. }
