Series XXVIII Best Games

Four games this time out, without a clear theme, so we’ll just take them in the order they happened.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants @ Wandering House of David, Game 1

Brooklyn’s Frank Knauss and the House of David’s Bob Rush came into this one as two of the hottest arms in the league … so naturally, they lasted under 5 innings combined, giving up 7 runs each. Brooklyn got a 2-run homerun from Beals Becker and a 2-run hit from Pete Browning en route to its touchdown while the House of David benefitted from a 3-run shot from Elrod Hendricks and a 2-run blast from Duke Snider.

Brooklyn’s John Briggs homered in the top of the 5th for an 8-7 lead for Brooklyn, but the House of David came back with 5 in the bottom of the 8th, keyed by Ernie Banks‘ 3-run shot and a solo shot from Joe Harris in his first WBL start. That made it 12-8 and set the stage for an entertaining 9th inning.

2 singles and a walk loaded the bases and brought in the House of David’s closer, Bruce Sutter. Sutter was off, giving up hits to Becker and Roy White, but escaped by getting the final 2 outs with the bases loaded.

Ed Bauta got rocked in his debut for the House of David and Trevor Hildenberger‘s collapse overshadowed good work by Brooklyn’s Ralph Branca and Orel Hershiser, who combined for 6 innings of 1-hit relief.

Briggs had 4 hits and scored 4 times while Ray Dandridge and Becker had 3 hits each, with Becker driving in 4. For the House of David, Banks had 3 hits and everybody else had at least one in a balanced onslaught.

#Indianapolis ABC’s @ Homestead Grays, Game 1

Indianapolis’ Doc White has wobbled a little since being inserted into the rotation, but here he was brilliant, with a 4-hit shutout through 8 innings. Surprisingly, though, Homestead’s pitching was nearly matching them: Bob Friend gave up only a single unearned run through 6 innings–a solo homerun by Joey Votto after a dropped foul ball–and the duo of Dave Giusti and Rick Ownbey–fantastic since their joint recall from AAA–chipped in with 5 innings of 2-hit relief.

Which, for those of you paying attention, means we went into extra innings.

A walk to Josh Gibson in the top of the 9th chased White from the game. Rob Dibble came in, walked Davey Johnson, and gave up a game-tying double to Roberto Clemente to tie the game.

And that’s where we stayed until the top of the 12th, when Ownbey gave up a single to Danny Hoffman and a pinch-hit, inside-the-park-homerun to Bob Bescher. Clay Carroll was perfect through 2 1/3, picking up the victory for the ABC’s.

Andy Van Slyke went 2-for-5, keeping his average above the .400 mark.

#Houston Colt 45’s @ Detroit Wolverines, Game 3

Detroit’s Hal Newhouser and Houston’s Bones Ely were both strong. Ely had a 1-hit shutout through 6, but 6 walks drove his pitch count way up, chasing him from the game while Newhouser allowed 2 runs over the same span on RBI singles by Tony Gwynn and Jeff Bagwell before exiting.

2 homeruns in the 8th put Detroit in front: a 3-run shot from Oscar Gamble and a 2-run dinger from Ernie Lombardi. Both came against Houston’s Brad Lidge who had, until this outing, looked better in his return to the WBL.

The Colt 45’s made it close: with 2 outs, Craig Biggio singled and Bagwell walked, bringing Pete Hill–recently and somewhat controversially installed as the cleanup hitter–to the plate. Hill promptly tripled, making it a 1 run game at 5-4, but John Hiller was able to get Gwynn to ground out weakly to end the game.

#Birmingham Black Barons @ Ottawa Mounties, Game 4

Birmingham just keeps rolling. This game is illustrative of their sweep of Ottawa: here, the Mounties’ Bob Moose was excellent in his first start for the team, allowing only 1 earned run through 7 innings. Birmingham’s Vic Willis was solid, and each team had fielding miscues that contributed to runs, but we ended the 7th with Ottawa leading, 5-3, with Ottawa’s Roy Sievers and Birmingham’s Jim Pagliaroni going deep.

The Black Barons tied the game in the top of the 8th on a 2 run homerun by Curtis Granderson. And it stayed that way for another 5 innings, until Troy Tulowitzki doubled home 2 runs in the top of the 13th.

Scott Baker, Larry Benton, Steve Bedrosian, and Kent Mercker combined for 7 innings of 2-hit relief and the two staffs combined to whiff 27 batters combined, with Ottawa’s Ryan Dempter fanning 5 of the 7 batters he faced.

The Mounties’ Larry Parrish had 3 hits in the losing cause.

TWIWBL 26.4: Series XX Notes – Marvin Miller Division

#Birmingham Black Barons

Larry Benton struck out 11 batters in 6 innings, leading the Black Barons over San Francisco 6-4 in his first start of the year. Billy Southworth and Hank Aaron drove in 2 runs each, and Harley Young bailed out an exhausted bullpen with his 2nd save of the season.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Trevor Hildenberger will miss about a week, sending him to the DL with Orel Hershiser returning to Brooklyn.

#Miami Cuban Giants

José Canseco hit 2 homeruns to lead the Cuban Giants to an 11-7 victory over Kansas City. Will Clark had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs.

The Cuban Giants exploded for 5 runs in the 1st, then saw their lead evaporate before a bases-loaded walk to Gary Sheffield in the bottom of the 9th eked out a 7-6 win. Canseco had 4 hits and Jim Thome drove in 3. Each of them, along with Alan Ashby, went deep.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

The experiment of leaving Miguel Cairo without a backup at SS ends after only a few games, as Ron Hunt goes to AA with Denny Hocking coming up to San Francisco.

Tim Hudson‘s first start for the Sea Lions did not go as planned with the recent acquisition giving up 4 runs in 5 innings en route to a loss to lowly Birmingham. Bobby Bonds and Pedro Guerrero had 3 hits each in the losing effort.

Summary

Brooklyn sits in 2nd place in the Marvin Miller Division, only 3.5 games behind Portland, despite a general sense they’ve underperformed on the season. So, I guess that’s good?

What’s Gone Right

The pitching. Don Drysedale has been among the better starters in the league, and Frank Knauss has emerged as a quality #2 starter. Don Sutton, Dutch Leonard, and Sandy Koufax have been solid behind them with Koufax occasionally spectacular (including the only 1-hitter in the league). Add to that a back-end trio in the bullpen of Dave Von Ohlen and Trevor Hildenberger setting up Watty Clark, and the Royal Giants have everything they need on the mound.

The AAA Shuttle. The Royal Giants have been quite successful in their call-ups.

Orel Hershiser and Smokey Joe Williams started the year in the WBL, but struggled. Their replacements–Tommy Hanson, Knauss, and Von Ohlen–have been excellent.
The original duo behind the plate–Mike Piazza and Steve Yeager–were horrible. Their replacements, Al López and Duke Farrell, look OK so far.
Raúl Mondesí, who earned a spot on the roster out of spring training, struggled, but Jermaine Dye looks to be the real deal as his replacement.

The Running Game. Five players (Duke Snider, Beals Becker, Jackie Robinson, Davey Lopes, and Dickie Thon) have more than 10 steals each.

What’s Gone Wrong

Power. Only Snider and Ron Cey have more than 10 homeruns (although, to be fair, both Becker and Robinson have 9). Still, some more pop would be a welcome addition.

Catching. As referenced above, Piazza was especially a disappointment, as he was expected to add some power to a lineup that really needs it.

The Infield. Cey is set at 3B, and Robinson clearly has a role. But the rest has been … unsettled at best. Dan Brouthers has been miserable at 1B, and may be on his way out of town, and neither Lopes (2B) nor Thon (SS) have really convinced. Ray Dandridge has been excellent in a limited opportunity, and should be an everyday starter from here on out.

Key Storylines

The Royal Giants have managed their AAA movement very well, as detailed above. Probably the key storyline here is their ability to remain competitive while still searching for their identity.

Koufax is a bit of an enigma, and his continued development bears watching–and the thought of what he and Smokey Joe Williams could be is quite enticing.

What to do with Robinson remains a challenge: he doesn’t field well enough to play 2B a ton, and doesn’t hit well enough to play 1B.

Trading Outlook

BUYING.

OFs Dye, Hi Myers, and Matt Holliday have some value. If the right opportunity came along, some of their SP surplus could be on the trading block: Hershiser, Leonard, Knauss.

AAA Shuttle

Piazza and Yeager have both done well at AAA, and may be due for a recall if López or Farrell falter. Likewise, Hershiser has been dominant in the minors and he, along with Darren Dreifort, are ready should they be needed.

Midseason Changes

Infield changes a-plenty. Robinson becomes the everyday 1B, with Brouthers being sent to AAA (Eric Karros was recalled to backup Robinson). 2B/SS is trickier: Dandridge becomes the starter at one of those, but there’s just nobody in the system arguing for playing time. So Dandridge will start, with a bit of rotation between Thon and Lopes, if no other moves are made.

Hildenberger moves into the setup role, demoting Eric Gagne.

Brooklyn leads the division, with San Francisco and Portland close on their heels. Even this early, a bit of a gap appears between those three teams and Miami and Birmingham at the bottom of the division.

#Birmingham Black Barons

OF Al Schweitzer–one of the better performers for the Black Barons in the early season with a 267/389/422 line–is injured; depending on the duration, a roster move might be looming, with both Dale Murphy (038/194/038) and Chipper Jones (088/238/206) possibly being sent to AAA as part of the transaction.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

It was an unkind week for the Royal Giants, with both SP Orel Hershiser and 3B Jim Delahanty hitting the injured list. Hershiser will miss close to 2 months with an oblique strain, moving Dick Redding into the rotation. Lefty Frank Knauss was recalled from AAA to take Redding’s slot in the bullpen. Delahanty will be out close to a year, and Duke Farrell was recalled to take his spot, also clearing room for phenom SS/3B Ray Dandridge to move to AAA.

RP Jeff Montgomery–released by Houston–was signed to a minor league contract.

#Miami Cuban Giants

An 0-4 day at the plate against the New York Giants ended Will Clark‘s 10 game RBI streak.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Dennis Eckersley was put on the 10-Day IL and Carlos Carrasco was demoted to AAA to help address some pitching issues. If, as expected, Eddie Plank is available in a day, the Sea Lions should be fine with the addition of Ps Rick Langford and Diego Segui from AAA.

FA OF Mookie Wilson was signed to a minor league contract.

TWIWBL 4.1: Notes from Series III

The New York Black Yankees saw their 10 game winning streak come to an end in a 4-2 loss to the Wandering House of David. The Black Yankees are tied with the Kansas City Monarchs for the best record in the league at 11-3, with the Brooklyn Royal Giants the only other team with double-digit victories. Those 4 teams–New York, Wandering, Kansas City, and Brooklyn–each lead their divisions.

Two decent hitting streaks are still intact: Babe Ruth has a 14 game streak (see below for a dramatic extension by Ruth) and the Baltimore Black Sox‘s Dan McGann has hit safely in 13 straight games.

Philadelphia‘s Ray Collins and Brooklyn‘s Don Drysedale are the only 3 game winners in the league (both are 3-0), and Portland‘s Johan Santana leads the league with 6 saves.

Houston‘s George Brett hit .538 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBIs to win the WBL Player of the Week.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Orel Hershiser (1-0) gave up only 5 hits while striking out 8 in a complete game victory over Cleveland. Hershiser’s only mistake of the day was a 2-run HR to Evan Longoria as the Royal Giants eased to a 6-2 win.

#Cleveland Spiders

Cleveland has basically created a fast shuttle between their AAA affiliate in Buffalo and the big leagues. Just across these five games, here’s who used it:

With John Ellis no longer carrying an injury, the Spiders demoted Harry Bemis.
Jim Gantner was called up from AAA to provide some depth at 2B behind Chuck Knoblauch.
Whit Wyatt returned from the DL, sending Sudden Sam McDowell down.
Yordano Ventura was put on the IL even though the Spiders were, at the time, unsure as the extent of his injuries (turns out to have been fine, Ventura is out for 4 months with bone spurs).
With the OF totally gassed and lacking depth, Peanuts Lowrey was called up.

Not all news for Cleveland was injury related: Bob Feller moved to 2-0 with 8 shutout innings against Brooklyn in a 9-1 Spiders’ victory.

#Detroit Wolverines

Phenom Ty Cobb continues to press for more playing time, going 3-for-4 with a HR in a start against Kansas City.

#Homestead Grays

With Corey Kluber still injured, Homestead recalled Cliff Lee for an emergency start. Lee was excellent, leading the Grays to keep him on the roster at the expense of Bill Fischer, who had struggled in a few early season appearances.

#Houston Colt 45’s

Bret Saberhagen was still not 100%, so the Colt 45’s did some roster juggling, sending Saberhagen to AAA for a day and recalling David Clyde. Clyde was lit on fire in his start, and sent right back to AAA after the game.

Roy Oswalt (2-1) combined with Trevor Hoffman for a 6 hit shutout against Portland.

#Kansas City Monarchs

The Monarchs’ Luke Hamlin–of all people–threw the best start of the year so far, allowing only 1 hit over 7 innings against Detroit while striking out 11. Neither Frank DiPino nor Jeff Pfeffer allowed a hit in closing the game out for a 1-0 Kansas city win.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Ramon Martinez tied the best game score of the year with a 5-hit complete game shutout of Chicago that took only 94 pitches, earning his first victory of the year.

#New York Black Yankees

With a 12-game hitting streak on the line, Babe Ruth came to the plate as a pinch hitter with his team down 2 in the bottom of the 9th and a runner on first. Ruth deposited Tom Niedenfuer‘s pitch in the left field seats for his 4th HR of the year to tie the game, extending his streak to 13 (New York would lose the game 5-4 in 13 innings).

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Lefty Grove continued his dominant start to the year, pitching 8 innings of 3-hit, 1-run ball while striking out 11 against Ottawa to go 2-0 on the season. Grove’s game score of 80 was the best in the league to date (later surpassed by Hamlin).

#Wandering House of David

OF Pete Browning continued his torrid start with a 4-for-4 game against the Black Yankees with a 2B, a 3B, and 2 RBIs to key a 13 inning HoD victory.

Spring Training Preview: Brooklyn

In 2000 Spring Training, Team News

The back end of the rotation is up for grabs, with Frank Knauss and Fernando Valenzuela having the inside track on the #3 and #4 spots, with 1 out of Don Sutton, Jordan Zimmerman, and Smokey Joe Williams likely to hold the final slot.
- Only Dutch Leonard and perhaps Orel Hershiser have been solid as SP, with Knauss and Valenzuela being downright horrible. It’s early, but look for Sutton, Dick Redding, and Brickyard Kennedy to get looks as well.
  - Four slots are set, with Sutton, Don Drysdale, Leonard, and Hershiser earning starting slots. Kennedy, Redding, and Williams are vying for the last spot, with Valenzuela heading to AAA.
Dave Von Ohlen, Trevor Hildenberger, Darren Dreifort, and Terry Forster are battling for the middle of the bullpen.
- The bullpen has been very strong through 10 games, with only Watty Clark‘s role as closer settled.
There’s no question Jackie Robinson can contribute, the question is at what position. 1B is blocked by Dan Brouthers, leaving the challenge of Hobe Ferris at 2B.
- Robinson has performed well, for sure. Davey Lopes, called up when Sandy Koufax went down injured, hasn’t done much to change the situation at 2B, where Ferris’ glove still probably gives him the edge.
  - Lopes–and Tommy Corcoran–have hit better than any other middle infielders, so it’s pretty unsettled up the middle, especially since neither Dickie Thon nor Pee Wee Reese have been able to crack the Mendoza line..
It’s possible that 1 of Michael Brantley, Matt Holliday, Jeffrey Leonard, Curt Flood, and Art Griggs forces their way onto the roster.
- Flood, Brantley, Hi Myers, and Griggs have been totally overmatched in the early going, with Holliday and the surprising Jermaine Dye moving up the roster.
  - Griggs, Flood, Myers, and Brantley have all headed down to AAA (along with C Hank Gowdy). Todd Walker, Morrie Arnovich, and Raul Mondesi have been recalled for some OF flexibility.
