Cleveland Spiders
The Spiders’ closer, Terry Adams, will miss about a week. This makes the acquisition of Aroldis Chapman look even smarter, as Chapman logically steps right into the role. In a bit of a surprising move, Stew Cliburn was recalled from AAA Buffalo.
The injury bug continued to bite: starter Pat Malone will join Adams on the DL, also for about a week, with reliever Andrew Bailey recalled from AAA. It’s not clear who takes Malone’s starts in the meantime, but it will likely call to either Whit Wyatt or Chuck Porter.

New York Black Yankees
Lou Gehrig had himself a day: 4-for-5, 3 R, 8 RBI, 3 HR including a grand slam, and 14 total bases in an 11-9 victory over Cleveland. It was a nice turnaround, as Gehrig had whiffed 5 times a few games earlier, tying the American League mark for futility in a single game.
Don Mattingly, Gehrig’s 1B/DH partner, launched 2 of his own a couple days later, including a walkoff shot in an 8-6 win. That game saw Rogers Hornsby hit his first of the year and Mickey Mantle and Eric Davis go back-to-back as the Black Yankees keep searching for their swagger in the early season.
Whitey Ford, Hoyt Wilhelm, and Goose Gossage combined on a 3 hit, 3-0 blanking of Baltimore. It was Ford’s 2nd win and Gossage’s 1st save of the season.
