Waite Hoyt carried a 1-hitter into the 9th at Birmingham and finished with a 2-0 combined 3-hitter. The game was scoreless through 8 — Chicago scored both runs in the top of the 9th — and Hoyt went back out and gave up 2 singles before A. J. Minter got the last out. Hoyt struck out 12 for a game score of 89, and is 3-1 with a 2.64 ERA: everything the American Giants could have hoped for in his arrival from the Black Yankees late last season.
